Meet Lukáš Mrlák, one of the artists joining us at the Harry Whitehorse International Wood Sculpture Festival.

Based in the Czech Republic, Lukáš brings an unconventional path to sculpture. After a 23-year career with the Czech Police, where he worked his way up to detective in criminal investigation, he discovered wood carving almost by chance.

What began as a curiosity quickly became a passion. After creating his first sculpture with a borrowed saw and a piece of wood, Lukáš continued carving in his spare time before making the decision in 2024 to pursue it full-time.

Now early in his sculptural journey, Lukáš brings a fresh perspective shaped by instinct, curiosity, and a willingness to take risks.

We’re excited to welcome him to Lake Monona as he creates alongside artists from around the world.

There’s a moment each evening at the festival when the chainsaws quiet down, the light drops over Lake Monona, and people gather along the shoreline to watch the sculptures take shape.

That experience is only possible because of volunteers.

The 2026 Harry Whitehorse International Wood Sculpture Festival is now seeking volunteers for June 19–27 at San Damiano Monona. Help welcome visitors, assist artists, support cultural demonstrations, and be part of a week centered on art, community, and connection.

Whether you can help for a few hours or several days, we would love to have you involved.

Martina Kreitmeier joins us as one of the international sculptors at the Harry Whitehorse International Wood Sculpture Festival.

Based in Bavaria, Germany, Martina trained first as a carpenter before going on to earn a master’s diploma in wood sculpture in Munich, where she was awarded the Bavaria State Prize. Her background in both craftsmanship and fine art continues to shape her sculptural practice today.

Working across wood, stone, bronze, clay, and more, her work spans public installations, commissioned pieces, and international sculpture symposia across Europe and beyond. With more than 40 symposiums to her name, many of her works now live in public spaces.

Martina brings a deep understanding of material, form, and craft to her work, shaped by decades of hands-on experience and study.
