It was great to have Joe Vipperman with us at the Dam 50K race on Saturday at the Smith Mountain Project. Joe is a retired AEP and Appalachian Power executive and namesake of the Joseph H. Vipperman Visitors Center that sits above the Smith Mountain Dam. Joe is a resident of Smith Mountain Lake.

After completing 32 miles over county roads and wooded trails up and down Smith Mountain, Nicholas Dipirro of Charlottesville, Va. nears the finish line as first-place winner of the first SML Dam 50K ultra run held April 2. Dipirro finished the course in an amazing 4 hours (4:12:49). Appalachian Power was primary sponsor of the race coordinated by the Franklin County YMCA. The 50 K race started and ended at the Smith Mountain Dam and wound through Bedford and Pittsylvania counties. A 5K run took participants around the dam property and upper Leesville Lake. Appalachian employees played key roles in mapping out the run course and providing security on race day; many participated in the runs.
