As part of the United Way of Southwest Alabama 100 Days of Caring, the Arthur R. Outlaw Mobile Convention Center, Regions Arena (Regions Arena), and Saenger Theatre employees volunteered earlier in May at Penelope's Closet to organize and clean their store! Proceeds from the store benefit Penelope House.

It was a great experience to give back and support the community where Oak View Group operates!

The convention center is named after Arthur R. Outlaw whose vision helped shape the city’s downtown waterfront.

Outlaw served as Mayor of Mobile from 1967–1968 and later became the city’s first elected mayor (since 1911), serving from 1985–1989. During his elected term, his plan included construction of a waterfront convention center.

Although Outlaw was defeated by Mike Dow in 1989, Dow carried the convention center project through to completion. The facility opened in 1993.

Outlaw was married to Dorothy “Dot” Smith Outlaw, who was deeply involved in the Mobile community and Mardi Gras culture. Dot served on the MCA Court in 1949 while Arthur was a Knight. She was also active in several mystic societies and the Junior League of Mobile. Dot passed away in 2022.

The Mobile Convention Center was renamed in 1999. Arthur R. Outlaw passed away in 2000.

The venue that bears his name continues to play a major role in Mobile traditions today, hosting events such as the Mobile Carnival Association Queen Coronation and JLM’s Christmas Jubilee.

Yesterday’s monthly staff meeting included a paper airplane contest! We got updates across all the Oak View Group venues in Mobile (Saenger Theatre/Regions Arena). We shared team successes and enjoyed good conversations with a sweet treat – ice cream with toppings!

We also recognized the Employee of the Month – Mike Smitherman, Parking Attendant Manager at the Convention Center. Mike plays a huge role in creating a positive guest experience each day, and we’re thankful for all he does. Congratulations, Mike! 👏

✈️ Congratulations to Erik Hudson, GM for Regions Arena and Saenger Theatre, for taking home the win in the paper airplane contest — although we may have to give our GM, Matthew, credit for designing a sleek, stealth-style plane that definitely looked championship-worthy!😄

Be sure to check out the comments to watch the contest!

Teamwork makes the dream work! 💪👋

The setup is one of the biggest parts of every successful event. Take a look at our crew hard at work at the Mobile Convention Center as we hosted the Bishop State Community College graduation commencement ceremony this week. 🎓

A huge shoutout and THANK YOU to everyone working behind the scenes to help bring these events to life — from setup crews to event staff and partners who make it all possible. Even our General Manager and Operations Director jumped in to help make sure everything was ready for a successful event!

During the recent United Way National Day of Caring, Tiffany Johnson, Accounting Manager with the Mobile Convention Center and Oak View Group, volunteered with others from the Regions Arena and Saenger Theatre at Penelope's Closet as part of United Way of Southwest Alabama 100th anniversary celebration.

When asked why she volunteers, Tiffany’s response was simple: “Because it’s what you’re supposed to do!”

Her dedication to serving the community is just one of the many reasons she was recently named April Employee of the Month. Thank you for making a difference in our community! 👋

Tiffany Johnson with Oak View Group shares, “I volunteer because I want to and because I feel I have to. We are called to take care of the least of these.”
