💙🙏Rest in Power to a true legend, JellyBean Johnson 🙏💙
Today, our community grieves the passing of Garry George “Jellybean” Johnson, the founding member and original drummer of The Time. Johnson played alongside iconic Minnesota legends like Prince, Jimmy Jam, and Terry Lewis, helping define a genre that fused funk, R&B, rock, and so much more.
Jellybean passed away last night, just two days after his 69th birthday. Beyond his work on the drums, he made a lasting impact as a producer, guitarist, and songwriter. He co-created Janet Jackson’s #1 hit “Black Cat” and worked with artists like Alexander O’Neal, New Edition, Mint Condition, and many others.
He was also a champion of preserving Minnesota’s rich musical history by founding the Minneapolis Sound Museum, which is dedicated to honoring the city’s pioneering artists.
Jellybean’s music was unapologetically funky, and his presence on stage, whether behind the drums or on guitar, was magnetic. He leaves behind a legacy that shaped both local and global music.
His daughter, Bianca Rhodes, has been a dear friend, media collaborator, and currently serves on the board of my non-profit. My heart shatters for her in this moment. By her request, I will continue to share the story of her father, one of Minnesota’s musical giants. In the meantime, my condolences are with her, their family, and the entire music community. 🎸🥁🖤
