Featured on our 2020 virtual Homes by Architects Tour, this stunning, 1910 Prairie School-style home was one of the first projects undertaken by the renowned partnership of William Purcell and George Elmslie.

Unfortunately, the kitchen had since been modified in a way that did not fit the home’s significant history or original design, nor met its current homeowners’ lifestyle and needs. David Heide Design Studio was brought in to renovate the kitchen and butler’s pantry to both function well for the owners and pay respect and tribute to the home’s origins. The design team carefully followed the Secretary of the Interior’s Guideline for Historic Preservation as much as possible during the design process.

Red birch elegantly recalls the tradition of using yellow birch in the back of historic houses. The backsplash tile was manufactured in the same manner as tile was historically made, and custom light fixtures feature colored glass and unlacquered brass that will darken over time to match the original brass throughout the home. Other details include preservation of the original plaster, finishes, and maple floors, and more.

*Guest post from 2025 Residential Emerging Architect Award recipient Matthew Erickson, AIA*

I’m honored to be one of this year’s recipients of AIA Minnesota’s Residential Emerging Architect Award and happy to share a few projects that reflect how I approach residential design.

With every home, I aim to design spaces as unique as the people who will live in them—shaped by listening, interpreting, advising, and inspiring. That often means blending architectural styles in ways that not only meet client goals but elevate them: honoring the character of the location while introducing more light, openness, and the elements that support modern living. The Sunny Lake Home is a strong example.

Originally our clients’ guest and pool house, this structure became the foundation for their full-time residence—preserving the historic charm they loved while adapting the home for a new life stage, entertaining, and everyday comfort. We worked from the original footprint and a few key elements but reimagined nearly everything else. The new second floor and reconfigured main level allowed us to bring in more light and openness, while intentionally defining spaces and creating areas for quiet retreat. A full wall of windows—uncommon in Shingle-style homes—opens the living area to the lake. To make it feel natural within the architectural style, we extended the roofline to form a porch that frames and shelters the glass while providing additional square footage needed for bedrooms. At either end, flared piers of local stone reinforce the relaxed, welcoming feel of lakeside living—and bring in a favorite element from the clients’ former home.

Inspired by sitting out under the stairs and backyard bonfires, the new home is strategically tucked into the sloped site as an abridged split level and features a generous tuck-under two-car garage, den/guest room, powder room, and entry vestibule on the lower level and living, kitchen, dining rooms, and bedrooms on the upper. Solid oak railings, stairs, a full-height slat wall, and custom trim work, sourced locally, and oiled maple plywood met material and environmental goals while still being cost-effective.

Don’t miss Home 1 “Pear Lake Camp,” which is exclusively on the VIRTUAL Homes by Architects Tour!

This lakeside Wisconsin retreat began as a one-room, timber-framed cabin built by hand in the 1990s, with a bunkhouse and a “party barn” added over time to entertain guests. The owners now desired a larger cabin with a full kitchen and additional bedrooms that respected their established patterns of activities.

The original cabin was relocated further inland on the site, and a new home was designed with modern amenities while still maintaining a cozy cabin feel. The windows were strategically placed to maximize lake views, provide natural light, and facilitate cross breezes. Structural insulated panels (SIPs) used on the roof and exterior insulation of the walls prevent thermal bridging and increase energy efficiency. As a nod to the original cabin, the new cabin incorporates timber framing (no nails or metal connections!) in the kitchen/great room.
