On August 1, 1944, at 5pm the Warsaw uprising erupted,known by the codename ‘W’ for ‘Wolność’ [freedom]). It was one of the most important and, at the same time, the most dramatic events in the history of the city. Though planned to take a few days, it lasted over two months.

The Warsaw Uprising was a 63-day military struggle by the Polish Home Army to free Warsaw from German rule, assert national independence before the Soviet Red Army arrived, and support Allied victory. It began on August 1, 1944, and ended on October 2, 1944, resulting in massive destruction and heavy casualties.
