Buckle up, because if you’re rolling through Ohio and manage to pronounce all these names without Google whispering in your ear, congratulations — you just passed the Buckeye Linguistics Final.
First up is Cuyahoga. Looks simple? Absolutely not. It’s “Kai-uh-HOE-guh.” If you said “Coo-yah-hog-uh,” the river just rolled its eyes.
Then you cruise into Chillicothe, which sounds like a pasta dish but is actually “Chill-uh-KOTH-ee.” Say it wrong and someone will gently correct you while holding a Skyline Chili.
Next stop: Bellefontaine. French? Technically. Pronounced “Bell-fountain.” Not “Bell-fon-tain.” Not “Bell-font-een.” Just… fountain. We gave up halfway through the French thing.
Slide over to Versailles, which in Ohio is proudly “Ver-sales.” Zero apologies. None.
Then you hit Russia, Ohio — pronounced “ROO-shee.” If you say it like the country, someone’s grandma will correct you immediately.
Swing through Piqua (Pick-wuh), Wapakoneta (Wap-uh-kuh-NET-uh), and Ashtabula (Ash-tuh-BYOO-luh), where every extra vowel feels like a side quest.
Over in Tuscarawas, you don’t pronounce it. You survive it. Same with Gnadenhutten, which looks like someone dropped a Scrabble bag on a map and committed to it.
Then there’s Put-in-Bay, which sounds easy until you try saying it after two island cocktails.
If you can rattle all of those off back-to-back without pausing, ODOT should personally salute you, Lake Erie will stop snowing sideways for five minutes, and every Ohio deer will wait politely before sprinting into your bumper.
Ohio isn’t just a state.
It’s a pronunciation obstacle course.
