😬 Does your lavender look like this? — grey, dry, and seemingly dead?

That’s exactly how many of ours look on the farm right now, but we’re still optimistic. If you look closer, you’ll see fresh green growth emerging from multiple spots that isn’t obvious at first glance.

So why is lavender taking so long to wake up this late in spring? It mostly comes down to weather and soil temperature. We had four late frosts in May, which tells the plants to hold off on new growth to avoid damage. On top of that, we had unusually cool temperatures until this week’s heat wave, keeping the soil cooler than normal. These two factors — air temperature and soil temperature — really slow down the start of the season, especially for French and hybrid lavender varieties.

Lavender almost never pushes out fresh growth everywhere all at once. It usually starts with just a few branches, then spreads quickly once the air and soil temperatures stay consistently warm.

Look for an explosion of new growth in the coming weeks. If your plants still aren’t showing any signs of life by June, then it’s time to be concerned.

🌿 The Old Fire Barn planting is waking up strong and early! While many of our lavenders on the farm are just now starting to show the first faint signs of green, this patch—tucked in with great wind protection from the surrounding homes and tall buildings—is already breaking dormancy well ahead of schedule. It’s a great reminder of how much microclimates matter.

Today feels like the perfect day to share it: If your lavender still looks sleepy, hang in there. Lavender is famously one of the last perennials to wake up in spring. Don’t pull it yet—give it time. Most years, the late starters catch right up once the soil warms.

Stay tuned as we go deeper into this on the farm this week. Enjoy the sunshine 🌞

Summer is about to get a whole lot more purple! Our 9th Annual Lavender Harvest Festival is right around the corner—only two months away!

Back in 2016 we stuck those first little lavender plants in the soil with zero idea how far they (and we) would go. What started as a hopeful experiment has turned into a beloved tradition, and we have every one of you to thank for that 😊

This is the weekend we throw the gates open, crank up the music, fill the air with the scent of fresh lavender, and let good food, local vendors, and even better company take over. It’s our favorite reminder to slow down and enjoy the simple, beautiful things.

No matter if you’ve walked these rows with us for years or you’re finally making the trip in 2026, we’re saving a spot for you in the fields.

Clear your calendar and bring everyone you love!
