Juan Atkins, a founding father of techno and one of electronic music’s most influential pioneers, has died at the age of 64.
His agency, Greensmith Artists, confirmed the legendary Detroit producer’s passing today, November 1. A representative told Resident Advisor that Atkins was found unresponsive in his Mexico City hotel room ahead of a scheduled performance at YuYu Cine Club and was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
A central figure in the birth of Detroit techno, Atkins was one-third of the revered Belleville Three alongside Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson, whose revolutionary work in the early 1980s helped establish the foundations of a genre that would transform electronic music worldwide.
His extraordinary career began with Cybotron, the pioneering electro duo he formed with Richard Davis in 1980. Following landmark releases like “Clear,” Atkins went on to establish his influential Model 500 project, releasing the seminal 1985 record “No UFO’s” and founding Metroplex Records, one of Detroit techno’s defining labels.
Atkins was also instrumental in establishing the genre’s name through his contribution “Techno Music” to the landmark 1988 compilation Techno! The New Dance Sound of Detroit, which helped bring Detroit’s burgeoning electronic movement to international audiences.
Over more than four decades, Atkins helped shape the very language of electronic music, leaving behind a monumental legacy that extends across generations of artists, dance floors, and communities worldwide.
Techno would not exist as we know it without Juan Atkins. May he rest in peace. 🕊️
