The Global Camaraderie of Cyclists
—Tim Leary, Rotarian

I got into cycling while living in rural England in my late twenties. It seemed like a good way to travel and see the people and the countryside up close. I had a custom-built touring bike with a Holdsworth frame. I started riding bucolic country roads of East Anglia around Ipswich. My first trip outside of England was a three-week, solo cycle tour of France. I started with three days in Paris for sightseeing and visiting some museums. Unfortunately, all the museums were closed due to a worker’s strike.

I decided to ride out to the Bois de Boulogne and see what was in the park. One of my favorite cycling memories occurred on the ride. While doing laps around the outdoor track, I saw a few older men taking a break. I stopped nearby and they struck up a semi-conversation. It was "semi" because my French and their English were marginal. We ended up looking at my bike and they pointed out where various parts were made. They liked my Swiss made, side-pull Weinmann brakes.

I flatted while riding back to my room across Paris. As I was starting the repair, one of the Frenchmen happened to ride by. He stopped, grabbed my wheel and pushed me out of the way. It was clear he was going to repair the flat for me. He did so in a jiffy, and we were soon both on our way. I offered to pay him and he just laughed. Cyclists I know are like that, kind and willing to help out a fellow rider in distress. I’ve seen many similar examples on the Tour de Menlo.

Join us this August 10th and experience the camaraderie of a good ride.

We had a great turnout!

We had a very successful Tour de Menlo with 482 riders touring our beautiful peninsula on four different routes. We owe special thanks to the Fast Freddie Cycle Club, the Menlo Bike Club, and The Menlo Park Police for making the ride more enjoyable for all.
