Memphis Area Association of Governments - MAAG

Memphis Area Association of Governments - MAAG Memphis Area Association of Governments is the Planning and Development District serving the Greater Both MATCOG and MDDD had similar objectives and goals.

Memphis Area Association of Governments (MAAG) is Tennessee Development District and regional clearinghouse for federal programs in support of economic, housing and community development initiatives serving six counties (42 cities) in the Greater Mid-South including Fayette, Lauderdale, Shelby and Tipton counties in Tennessee, Crittenden County in Arkansas and DeSoto County in Mississippi. In 1968

, local governments from Crittenden County, DeSoto County and Shelby County incorporated the Mississippi, Arkansas and Tennessee Council of Governments (MATCOG). The purpose of the council was to undertake the regional planning activities, function as a metropolitan clearinghouse for federal programs and provide technical assistance to its membership. In 1972, the Memphis Delta Development District (MDDD) was organized for Fayette, Lauderdale, Shelby and Tipton counties in Tennessee. The district was organized under Tennessee legislation enacted to promote regional economic development and allow local governments to utilize federal resources. Therefore, to avoid duplication of effort, to affect economy of administration and to establish uniform procedures in accomplishing their joint and respective missions, the two organizations merged in 1974 to form MATCOG/MDDD. In 1994, the members approved the name change to Memphis Area Association of Governments or MAAG. Although the name changed, MAAG’s purposes of service to its members have remained.
