After taking a bye on Wilson Creek for two years, our decision to reconvene the Wilson Creek Trail Runs was deliberate and calculated. Knowing the energy it would take to stage a comeback, and not being sure of our capacity, we checked tentatively with all our key players before making a decision – HAM radio, ATV club, MRW Fire, aid station captains, BLM… All responses were a go. In late summer on a road trip to the Harriman ultra, we made the final determination to make it happen.
We pressed forward with a lot of questions. Would the trailrunning community love Wilson Creek like they once did? Would people still sign up for such a crazy event after the last three years? Would folks still be willing to volunteer their time and efforts to serve runners? After last weekend, we are thrilled to report an emphatic and resounding YES to answer these questions.
The Wilson Creek race was inspired by a man of few words but a gigantic volume of influence. I awoke on Friday morning remembering the gift shared by Dwight Schuh, the man who inspired the Wilson Creek Frozen Trail Runs in his daughter (co-director Emily). I knew we were doing the right thing and just prayed we could do it justice.
On race morning, two nervous race directors mustered every bit of hopefulness for a decent running day and safety for all. As runners arrived and aid station workers departed to set up, HAM operators and ATVers set up their posts, and the day began to unfold. A stunning sunrise bolstered our spirits. Soon enough, the 10- and 20-mile winners raced each other through the finish line on wheels, smiles blazing. More and more racers followed with huge smiles and arms in the air.
Throughout the day, runners and workers alike approached us with gratitude for resurrecting Wilson Creek. Their excitement was overwhelming. The sun set on the eighth Wilson Creek Trail Races, leaving behind evidence of how important this race is to not only us but to the trail running community.
We have learned from years of fire (2016), Snowmageddon (2017), pandemic (2021), and mental health (2022), every year that Wilson Creek can happen is a gift. It was our pleasure to share the gift in 2023 with you, and we are deeply moved by the reception from the trail community. Thank you for running. Thank you for volunteering. Thank you for reminding us what this race means to the trail running community, including those who support our crazy love of this trail run.
Lastly and maybe most importantly, here’s to January 20, 2024. Look for registration to open around Labor Day 2023. Hope to see you there.
