Italian Feast of the Assumption - Mechanicville Celebrating over 100 years of tradition every 15th of August

In August 1903, a small group of Mechanicville immigrants from southern Italian villages near Naples decided to observe August 15th as a feast day, just as they had done in their homeland. Although the Feast of the Assumption was officially designated a "holy day" in the Roman Catholic calendar only in 1950, it had been celebrated by peasants throughout southern Italy for centuries. This day, known as Ferragosto, marks the belief that the Virgin Mary was taken up into heaven body and soul. It is a significant feast day in the Catholic Church and is widely celebrated across Italy with various traditions and festivities. Within a year of that initial Assumption Day celebration in Mechanicville, the Fraternal Society established a Feast Committee to ensure the continuation of the tradition. The cultural significance of this feast lies in its deep-rooted history and the way it has brought our community together through religious processions, family gatherings, and festive activities. The celebration has often included parades, feasts, and fireworks, reflecting the rich cultural heritage and strong sense of community among Italian immigrants.
