On this Memorial Day, we ask you to look past parades and the long weekend. Take a moment of true silence. Say their names. Visit a cemetery and reflect on the youth of those lying there. And most importantly, let us resolve to live lives worthy of their sacrifice. Let us build a community and nation worthy of their devotion. By doing that, we ensure that their memory lives on, not just in stone and bronze, but in the way we treat one another as fellow Americans.

We are deeply thankful to the McCleary Police Department for escorting us today as we marched the colors from the post to the cemetery for our Memorial Day service, and safely back again afterward.

Their support and presence helped ensure that this tradition of remembrance was carried out with the dignity, respect, and solemnity that the day deserves. Memorial Day is a time to honor those who gave their lives in service to our nation, and we are grateful to have a community and law enforcement partners who stand beside us in that remembrance.

Thank you to the officers who took the time to support our veterans, our families, and our community today. Your professionalism and respect did not go unnoticed.

Among those buried in the city of McCleary cemetery are 250 veterans and VFW auxiliary members. For their Day of Service that was held on Saturday, May 9, McCleary VFW Post 5564 members, along with VFW auxiliary and community members, spent the morning cleaning many of these 250 headstones.

Thank you to everyone who came out and participated in our Day of Service! Edging and removing the overgrown sod from Veterans headstones was a much bigger project than we realized. Did you know we have over 200 Veterans in the McCleary Cemetery? We had to stop today before we had any heat injuries and were only able to get half the cemetery done. Don’t worry if we didn't get to your loved one yet. Our plan next year is to do the other half of the cemetery and maintain the ones we were able to get to today.

Lots of fun today!!
