On January 22, 1901, a fire like Martinsburg had not seen for many years occurred at the corner of Queen and Martin Streets. A three-story brick building occupied by Fine and Snyder, a clothier, was so severe that it spread to the adjacent building, occupied by W.H. Wilen, undertaker. Both structures were a total loss. Citizens of the town were on the roofs of their houses keeping the fire from spreading to their buildings.
The lot was sold to J.H. Hobbs, Jr., who, in 1902, constructed what is referred to as the 1902 building. In 1909, it was sold to George Katz, who, for many years would operate his clothing establishment in this location.
