Noquemanon Ski Marathon

Noquemanon Ski Marathon Please join us January 24th-25th 2025 for our 27th annual event!

The Noquemanon trail has been described by some as “the most beautiful trail I have ever skied on,” by others as “never dull,” and by a few as “deceptively tough.” It’s fair to say that the Noquemanon trail has many faces, ranging from gently rolling hills and flat lake crossings to testing climbs and plenty of downhills. One thing, however, remains prevalent throughout the entire trail: the beaut

ifully rugged wilderness of Michigan's Upper Peninsula that surrounds skiers throughout the course. The Noquemanon is one of the largest point to point ski marathons in America and is a premier rugged and remote ski marathon experience.

**ATTENTION**
1 hour delayed start for 50K waves (decision 1/22/26)

Please reference the 2026 official race bulletin found on www.noquemanon.com for complete details on schedule and course cut-off times.

The National Weather Service in Marquette has provided a weather forecast for Saturday 1/24/26 with high confidence that indicates the temperature at 9:00am at the 50K start line is anticipated to be at our prior established threshold of -13F with a wind chill of -24F (5mph winds) with the ambient temperature to improve to -10F by 10:00am. These later temperatures are within our protocol set for Saturday events. Given this information the race committee has delayed the 50K wave start times by 1 hour. All other Saturday event start times will proceed as originally scheduled. Strict cut-off times will be enforced and are listed in the race bulletin along with other important details. The official race bulletin will also be available at the Friday Expo/bib pickup along with a bus schedule that accommodates the 50K wave delays).

This delay will help to provide a safer environment for both competitors and our incredible volunteers. This adjustment allows not only for improved conditions, but, better support throughout the day. Because of the temperatures we have instituted specific cutoff times at each aid station up to Aid Station #6 at Forestville. These cutoffs will be hard stops, and competitors who arrive after the designated times will not be allowed to continue further on the course.

All pre-registered participants have received an email regarding Saturday's schedule change to the email address provided when registering. Participants wishing to change to a shorter event (strongly recommended if concerned about temperatures and/or making established cut-off times) should reach out to [email protected]. Participants should also read the cold weather protocol and safety information located on the race website hompage.

Any further adjustments for Saturday will be communicated as needed.

We're excited to offer a full course with very good snow conditions!

Junior Noque and Adaptive Races CANCELLED due to forecasted cold temperatures:

The National Weather Service in Marquette has provided a weather forecast for Friday with high confidence that indicates the ambient temperature at 4:00pm is anticipated to be -8F (and will continue to drop into the evening) with a wind chill of -28F. Winds are expected to be out of the northwest at 10mph with gusts up to 21mph. Our protocol set for the Junior Noque and the Adaptive races on Friday was -4F by race time. Given this information the race committee has therefore decided to cancel all of the Junior Noquemanon races (1K, 3K, 5K) and all of the Adaptive races (600M, 2K) scheduled for Friday January 23rd. They will not be rescheduled.

The race committee will continue to consult with our FIS technical delegate and with the National Weather Service which is providing Noquemanon specific forecasts for our events on Saturday. Any delay to the start and/or course alterations for Saturday will be made by or on Friday January 23rd .

Please stay up to date on any further event decisions for Saturday on our race website at www.noquemanon.com and to email addresses used when registering for 2026 events.

Thank you for your continued support of the Noquemanon Ski Marathon, and your patience while we organize and reorganize due to the challenging conditions the event is facing.

All pre-registered participants have received an email at the address they used to register. Information will continue to be posted to the race website homepage and to pre-registered participants by email.

Cold Weather and Safety/Preparation Information:

It will be very cold this year, and taking preventative measures against frostbite and hypothermia will be imperative. Please dress appropriately for conditions by using multiple layers, including one or two base layers that wick moisture away from the skin. Use an additional wind-blocking layer over sensitive areas (e.g., wind briefs). Cover all exposed skin, including:

• Buff for ears below the hat line
• A second buff around the neck that can be pulled up over the mouth
• Face tape to protect exposed skin on the nose and cheeks
• Glasses or a face shield to protect your eyes
• Do not use eye drops of any kind in these conditions

Wear warm ski gloves and insulated ski socks, making sure ski boots are not overly tight, as restricted circulation increases frostbite risk. If you carry fluids, use an insulated water bottle. If not, be sure to utilize the aid stations for:

• Water
• Hammer HEED
• Hammer Gels where available
• Food

Taking in fluids and calories on very cold days is extremely important, as your body works harder to stay warm. You may not “feel” thirsty, but dehydration and calorie deficits can occur quickly. Skiers often bonk hard on cold days because thirst and hunger cues are suppressed.

Taking these preventative measures will help ensure a safe and enjoyable ski despite cold temperatures.

Additional Safety Recommendation:
It is highly recommended to carry a few old-fashioned hand warmers in your pockets. They are inexpensive, lightweight, and can be invaluable in the event of an equipment malfunction that forces you to stop skiing and begin walking.

Junior Noquemanon (Junior Noque):
Friday’s daytime high temperature is currently forecasted at -5°F, with moderate winds and wind chills at or below -15°F, and Friday night lows reaching -16°F. The minimum temperature required for Junior Noque races to occur is -4°F. If forecasts indicate that temperatures will not reach -4°F by race start time on Friday, the race committee may cancel Junior Noque races, with that determination being made on Thursday to allow families adequate time to plan.

Potential 50K Delayed Start:
The standard minimum temperature for the Full and Half Marathon races is -14°F. The race committee will decide Friday regarding any delayed start of the 50K Noquemanon Ski Marathon. A 1 or 2-hour delayed start will occur if there is strong confidence that the forecasted ambient temperature at 8:10 AM Saturday will be -13°F or lower.

• Any delayed start decision will be communicated via email to all pre-registered racers and posted on the race website
• If delayed, the bus schedule will also shift one or two hours later

Participants should remain attentive to updates and monitor details near the bus staging area at the Superior Dome.

Please review the linked document "Cold Weather Safety Protocols" on the race website at www.noquemanon.com

Stay tuned for additional updates as they are available!
