Story I shared on Dr. Bertice Berryâs story platform. Wanted to share with you.
Subject: Art
String Art Snoopy
Wow, this was a fun and deep dive back in the day for me. I donât remember how old I was, but I know I was a young girl in Summer Day Camp in NYC. One of my favorite activities was the Arts and Crafts Class. The memory that came flooding back to me was about creating a String Art Snoopy from scratch. We used paper and pencil to draw up our subject as a stencil, then we were given a piece of wood with some watercolor paints to paint the background for our subject.
I was a huge fan of Charlie Brown back then. As I type, this I guess itâs because my family all gathered around to watch his specials during the holidays. The Great Pumpkin, Thanksgiving, and the Christmas Special. Snoopy was my favorite character of the bunch, he was so fun and cool, âJoe Coolâ. This was a special time because it is reminding me of the family love we shared long ago - Food, Family and TV Specials. I grew up in a small family: Mom, Dad, Me and my Brother who is 10 years older than me. We had the one family TV in the living room where we bonded watching special shows.
Back to the Art. After the paint dried on the wood, we were given small nails and string to create the image we had drawn on the paper. Carefully, we used a small hammer to make sure we didnât hurt ourselves and then the instructor showed us techniques on how to wrap the string around the nails to bring our image to life. When I completed my Snoopy, I was so elated. I couldnât wait to take him home and show my parents. They let me hang him in my bedroom so I could see him every day.
After creating Snoopy I went on to create a few other projects but Snoopy was my Pride and Joy. Dr. Bertice Berry, thanks for this exercise, it makes sense why I still have warm and fuzzy feelings around Snoopy, he takes me back to when life was simple and not so complex. I wear an animated Snoopy watch right now and smile every time I check the time. I love you.
