Today’s Q&A features two-time Invitational Class champion of the Tucson Aerobatic Shootout, Bryant Mack.

What does getting invited to the Shootout mean to you personally?

Bryant: The Shootout is largely what inspired me to get into giant scale aerobatics and learn freestyle maneuvers when I was a young kid so to be invited to compete is huge for me.

What keeps you coming back to events like Tucson?

Bryant: What keeps me coming back is the opportunity to compete against some of the best pilots in the world, insane Invitational sequences/unknowns, watching unique and exciting freestyle, and the joy of seeing friends from all over.

What advice would you give someone trying to earn an Invitational spot?

Bryant: My advice to someone looking to earn an invitational spot, be absolutely sure you are ready because it is a big jump from Unlimited to Invitational.

What’s your mental routine before stepping up for a flight?

Bryant: My mental routine before a flight is typically to relax, clear my mind and try to purely focus on the sequence. I try to visualize how the entire flight will look before stepping up to fly it.

Who inspired you to get into precision aerobatics?

Bryant: Largely who inspired me to get into precision aerobatics was my Dad, but also coming to watch the TAS in 2009 as a young kid and seeing all of the legends I had watched videos of.

Q&A Time!

Let’s kick things off with a quick Q&A featuring 2024 Freestyle Champion Jase Dussia. Jase has competed in the Freestyle category multiple times in the Shootout.

1. Tell us a little about yourself. How long have you been flying and what inspired you to get into Freestyle Competitions.

Jase: I’ve been flying for 20 years, and I’ve enjoyed watching and flying freestyle since attending the XFC as a kid. That contest was the biggest inspiration to get me into it.

2. How would you describe your freestyle style?

Jase: It’s very difficult to say from my perspective because I try to fly a variety of styles.

3. How long does it usually take to build and practice your freestyle routine for an event like TAS?

Jase: In the past, it has varied. Some have taken several weeks, others just a few hours. But I never feel like it’s fully complete until it’s time to fly it in the contest.

4. Who are some pilots that inspired your freestyle flying style?

Jase: There’s been a variety. A few examples that come to mind are Jason Noll, Donatas Pauzuolis, and Daniel Holman.

5. What advice would you give a pilot who wants to start flying freestyle?

Jase: Fly within your comfort zone, practice is when you can push your boundaries.
