“Eleven Years of Memories, A Lifetime of Love”

What a weekend! Our 11th Gillyard–Johnson–Mahoney Family Reunion was so much more than a gathering—it was a beautiful reminder of the power of family, faith, fellowship, and staying connected.

Family came together to laugh, hug, reminisce, make new memories, strengthen old bonds, and celebrate the ties that continue to bind us from one generation to the next. The attendance, participation, and spirit of fellowship throughout the weekend reminded me that family connection doesn’t just happen, it happens because we intentionally choose one another.

One of the special highlights was watching our young mentees in action, learning, serving, participating, and seeing firsthand what it takes to carry the family legacy forward. They represent our future, and including them in the work of this reunion was an investment in the generations yet to come.

Our family skit, “Eleven Years of Memories, A Lifetime of Love,” brought that message home. It told the story of a family that makes an intentional decision to remain connected by coming together every two years. Through laughter, reflection, and heartfelt moments, the skit reminded us that reunions are not simply events on a calendar—they are a commitment to keeping our family story alive.

We also paused to honor and remember beloved family members who transitioned since our last reunion. Our balloon release was a touching tribute to those whose physical presence we miss, but whose love, lessons, memories, and place in our family will never be forgotten.

Throughout the weekend, there was a spirit of connectivity—between our elders and our youth, and Gretchen Petterway touched on the importance of connectivity in her Call to Action Action, “Healthy Living, Healthy Lifestyle”.

A very special recognition goes to our 2026 GJM Family Reunion Planning Team. What an outstanding accomplishment! Months of planning, meetings, phone calls, decisions, sacrifices, creativity, teamwork, prayers, and countless behind-the-scenes details came together to create a weekend our family will remember for years to come.

The most meaningful way we could have ended our reunion weekend was by doing what has sustained our family through generations—giving God the glory.

On Sunday morning, we gathered for Worship Service at Mt. Canaan Baptist Church, the church home of our Planning Team member Peggy Mahoney Clark. Together, we worshiped, prayed, gave thanks, and partook of Holy Communion, remembering the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and acknowledging the God who has kept our family through every generation. What a fitting conclusion: after celebrating our past, enjoying our present, remembering those who have gone before us, and preparing our young people for the future, we came together at the Lord’s Table as family. As Scripture reminds us:
“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” — Psalm 133:1 (KJV)

Our 11th Reunion may have come to an end, but the love, memories, laughter, fellowship, and renewed connections do not end here. Until we gather again, may we continue to call one another, check on one another, pray for one another, celebrate one another, and intentionally stay connected.
