It is with great sadness that we are forced to announce that the Equality March and Pride Picnic in Sayville has been canceled this year.
One of the largest organizations on Long Island, with much greater financial and political influence, had made an attempt to take our yearly pride event in the town of Sayville away from us. As a result, the Town of Islip has denied all our permits to march and make use of the Common Ground Park where we hold our yearly pride picnic without any explanation as to why. Though this organization has ultimately failed in their bid to hold their event in Sayville, they have succeeded in preventing our event from taking place. Despite multiple attempts to contact the Town of Islip and countless messages left, town officials continue to ignore us.
We apologize for the lack of communication regarding our event as it has been many frustrating months of fighting to get answers and though we still do not have any, we have exhausted all avenues of trying to come to a resolution. We would like to thank our fellow members of the Sayville Chamber of Commerce, the local businesses community, and their leadership for supporting us fully until the bitter end of this difficult process as it played out. We would also like to thank all of the other community organizations and vendors who have helped us to fund and put on this event year after year. It is these great organizations who do the heavy lifting for our community by providing valuable resources with genuine intentions and not by lining their own personal pockets. Most important of all, we would like to thank all the amazing community members, allies, and families who made this such a great event year after year.
Though we are not able to hold our event this year, we hope to be back in 2024, hopefully in the great town of Sayville, and if not, a new location. In the meantime this year’s intended after party at the Station Pub will be taking taking place on Sunday, June 11th. Stay tuned for the announcement and details.
