In 2017, GMBR was formed. That same year, the SECOND phone call we made about our new venture was to the
We’d been longtime subscribers and although we weren’t “anything” yet in 2017, we wanted them to know who we were..FJ has always meant that much to us.
They do what almost nobody else does. They interview musicians in a way that’s so human you feel like you know them. They love instruments not just as tools, but as living souls with their own story. They care about builders as much as players. Depth over noise. And the magazine itself is just… gorgeous. So yeah. We love FJ.
Fast forward 8 years and imagine our surprise when the ever-eloquent, slyly funny storyteller wrote about Maya De Vitry and her set at GMBR and called us “reliably magical.” We died.
We hadn’t met Eric yet, but when we finally did… we didn’t stop talking for hours. Common musical obsessions, origin stories, and yes, the fact that it all began when two middle schoolers met at a horse race.
Then last week, we opened our mailbox to the 58th issue of The Fretboard Journal, turned to page 73… and read about Green Mountain Bluegrass & Roots: “New England’s best little roots music festival.”
From stories about the craziness of our inaugural year, rainstorms, and a late-night surprise visit from the great Peter Rowan (who jammed until 3am) to the origin story of Watchhouse’s song “Coming Down from Green Mountain.” With quotes from some of our favorite musicians ever; Andrew Marlin, Chris Eldridge, Aoife and more expanding on how our mission to bring the best musicians together and make them feel like family, was coming to life. Ending with Jerry Douglas telling Christian Sedelmyer to hold onto what we’re building at GMBR because it’s a good thing!
Music to our ears. All of it.
Thank you, Eric, for getting us and weaving our story so beautifully.
Thank you, Fretboard Journal, for everything you do for this community.
Now for God’s sake… go get this issue. There are so many incredible stories inside and we are honored to be among them.
