Sappiness Alert: I don’t exaggerate when I say that Elevation filled my heart to bursting with gratitude this year. Yes, it was beyond exhausting. I felt like I might go into a coma the Monday after each event. Elevation Utah had a power outage, a snowstorm and the biggest Saturday night ever. Elevation Mammoth had 14 events over 5 days, a snowstorm, 11 dancers, 4 drag queens, and more than 2000 attendees. No wonder I wanted to collapse.
BUT, throughout the events, so many people came up to me to say thank you - to tell me that this community and this event meant something to them. They had made connections, they looked forward to it each year. Maybe they met their partner, or they felt a sense of belonging, they looked forward to gathering at Elevation every year. If they were new to the event, generally they said something like “I didn’t get it, but now I do. This is something special.”
In the moment, I appreciated each of those comments. But I was so busy that it wasn’t until after Mammoth that I had a moment to really process them in their entirety. How f*cking lucky and privileged am I to be able to work on something that makes people feel like they belong, like they have community, enough that they pull me aside to tell me their feelings? Sometimes they are friends who know me, but more often than not they are strangers or casual acquaintances.
It has been a challenging year for me personally since Elevation 2023, but the end of 2023 and the beginning of 2024 was full of soul-expanding moments that had started to restore my heart. And the attendees of Elevation 2024, through their appreciation and reminders of what is important in life – connection, love, community and joy – finished that project and have brought me life, literally. And I am beyond grateful.
I’m going to post a series of images and thoughts and shoutouts from Elevation 2024. Forgive me for the sappiness...nah, I take that back. I’m gonna lean into the gratitude. 🙏🏻 ⛷️ 🏳️🌈 🏂 ❄️
