I had the absolute pleasure of serving as the Spotlight Speaker at the latest Connections Breakfast, but I knew immediately that I didn’t want to tell this story alone.
Because you can’t really talk about community impact without talking about the people who make that impact possible.
I invited Karen Heller, President of the Malibu Education Foundation, and Mikey Pearson, former Malibu Mayor and Chair of the Community Brigade, to join me on stage.
I shared the story behind Malibu Moves and why we’ve worked so hard to create an event where everyone can feel like they belong. Runners and walkers. Different ages, abilities, body sizes, and experience levels. Even, and especially, the person who says, “I’m not a runner.”
But the finish line has never been the entire mission.
In just two years, Malibu Moves has donated more than $110,000 to charitable causes, with the majority remaining in Malibu. After the fires, supporting our schools, youth, recovery, and organizations working directly within our community became even more important.
Karen shared how Malibu Moves support helped launch a middle school athletics program that has since received ongoing public funding. Mikey spoke about the vital work of the Community Brigade and then shared his own Malibu Moves story: saying yes when he wasn’t sure he could do it, bringing his family along, and ultimately crossing the 5K finish line hand in hand with his wife.
His experience was a reminder that sometimes doing something hard simply reminds us that we are capable of hard things.
My message to the room was simple: protect and support community events.
They give us reasons to gather. They help us know our neighbors. They create morale, connection, and belonging. And when built intentionally, they can turn all of that goodwill into tangible impact.
And my second invitation?
Say yes to something that feels a little outside your comfort zone.
Maybe we’ll see you at Zuma Beach this October. 💛
Thank you to Karen and Mikey for sharing the stage with me, and congratulations to our raffle winners!
