THIS FRIDAY AT THEATRE MACON: This one-woman play, written by “one of the country’s most-produced Native playwrights” Mary Kathryn Nagle (Cherokee), tells the inspirational true story of Muscogee activist Jean Hill Chaudhuri. In a show that explores the importance of sovereignty for Indigenous nations through Chaudhuri’s tireless fight for justice, Nagle will provide a compelling story for contemporary audiences to listen to in Macon, which was built on Muscogee ancestral homelands.

This play is presented with support from the Ocmulgee Mounds Association on the evening before the annual Ocmulgee Indigenous Celebration. Spend the weekend enjoying one of the largest celebrations of Southeastern Indigenous culture!

"If you’re seeing this on Thursday, there’s still time to get to opening night’s “Red Fever.” It’s definitely worth a watch and is part of the Indigenous-focused Fire Starters Festival which now partners with the MFF. Co-writer and director Neil Diamond (Cree-Canadian) will be on hand for a Q&A. “Red Fever” follows the previous outstanding documentaries, the music-oriented “RUMBLE: The Indians Who Rocked the World” and “Reel Injun,” a look at Native American stereotypes and realities in film. I’ve seen them both leading to my excitement over “Red Fever. There’s a gallery opening of Native creations at 5 p.m. at the McEachern Art Center."

Thanks for the writeup yesterday in The Macon Melody!

The documentary directed by Lisa D'Apolito highlights the life of ventriloquist Shari Lewis.

We are really excited to amplify the work of McEachern Art Center with FROM OCMULGEE TO OKMULGEE 2024 - which opens next Thursday with a gallery opening at 5 PM. Artist Johnnie Diacon will be at the opening - he has many stunning works in this show, which features artists from the The Muscogee Nation, the people whose homelands we inhabit in Macon. Art will be for sale at the show and educational resources to learn more about Muscogee (Creek) culture will be featured. If you can't make the opening, the MAC is open Thurs-Fri 4-7 and Sat 10-1.

After the art opening, head to The Douglass Theatre for Macon Film Festival 2024 Opening Night Special Screening: RED FEVER - an amazing documentary about Indigenous influence on Western culture. The director, Neil Diamond (Cree), will have a Q&A after the film.

Big thank you to Johnny Cohen, director of the McEachern Art Center, and to Lisa Lemon of the Ocmulgee Mounds Association for continuing to support the Firestarters mission.
