Artist Spotlight!

Science, culture, nature, and experimentation all find their way into this week’s Living Colors Artist Spotlight. Our two featured artists draw from very different backgrounds, yet both embrace exploration and unexpected influences to create distinctive works in fiber. Meet Marissa Vignali and Ruth Vincent!

📍 Living Colors: Quilts Across the Spectrum is free and open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through December 11 at the Lynnwood Event Center. (Please call ahead to verify the exhibit is open if we’re hosting a private event.)

Retired marine biologist Carla Stehr brings her scientific background into her art, using cloth, paint, and stitch to explore the marine life and natural patterns that have fascinated her throughout her career.

For more than 20 years, Carla has created fiber art influenced by her experiences as a scientist, transforming observations of the natural world into works of art. Her award-winning pieces have been featured in numerous national and international exhibitions.

A longtime Pacific Northwest resident, Tesi Vaara began quilting in 1986, initially drawn to the striking colors and simplicity of traditional Amish quilts. By the early 2000s, her creative interests had shifted toward the world of art quilting.

Tesi continues to expand her practice through experimentation and study, recently completing a three-year Advanced Studies program in Experimental Stitch with Gail Harker. Today, she is exploring the possibilities of both machine and hand stitching as expressive elements in her art.

Julie Sevilla Drake finds artistic inspiration in what she describes as the “mess, mayhem, mischief and mystery” of a life filled with love, friendship, and adventure.

Creating from her home on Fidalgo Island, Julie has transformed those experiences and observations into award-winning quilts that have been exhibited in museums and galleries locally, nationally, and internationally.

Federal Way fiber artist Susan Smith brings an impressive mix of techniques to her work, combining appliqué, printing, piecing, hand stitching, free-motion machine quilting, and even digitally manipulated photographs printed directly onto fabric.

Her mixed-media fiber art has been exhibited at major shows and institutions including the International Quilt Festival, National Quilt Museum, Sacred Threads, and AQS QuiltWeek events, and her work can also be found in private collections.
