Two years ago we lost a huge part of our basketball family. One of the best parts of tournament time for us was the time we got to spend with our friend, Lou Byrd. Lou loved this tournament, and his favorite part was always refereeing the All-Star games.
Lou was a larger-than-life figure, and everyone connected to basketball in Lynn knew and loved him. He was a 1,000-point scorer at Lynn Tech and made an incredibly positive impact on youth basketball for more than 40 years. While he may no longer be with us, his presence is still felt every time we step into this gym.Today, we continue to honor Lou by recognizing two girls and boys who represent everything he stood for—sportsmanship, passion for the game, and respect for others with an award named in his honor.

Our first girls’ award winner is a two time all star who competed with outstanding energy, demonstrated strong leadership, and was a true teammate every time she stepped on the court. It is our honor to present her with this year’s Lou Byrd Award for Sportsmanship, Spirit, and Love of the Game—from Shoemaker Kenzie Clancy

Our second girls’ award winner is a two-time All-Star who helped lead her team to back-to-back Division 3 championships. She plays the game with a humble demeanor and consistently puts her teammates first, always willing to make the extra pass. It is our honor to present this year’s Lou Byrd Award for Sportsmanship, Spirit, and Love of the Game—from Lynn Woods Ava Sadler

Our first boys recipient showed incredible resilience throughout the tournament. Despite his team dropping their first two games, he never let it affect his mindset. With a positive attitude and relentless intensity, he helped lead his team on an unforgettable run—becoming the first #6 seed not only to reach the championship, but to win it. It is our honor to recognize him with this year’s Lou Byrd Award for Sportsmanship, Spirit, and Love of the Game—— from Callahan Jeremiah Jerome Spence

Our next boys award winner competes with great intensity while maintaining his composure in the biggest moments. He led his team to a Division 1 Championship, consistently stepping up when it mattered most. His dedication to his team was on full display as he competed in his semifinal game before attending his parents wedding later that same day. It is our honor to recognize him with this year’s Lou Byrd Award for Sportsmanship, Spirit, and Love of the Game——from Ingalls Bryce Hill
