Tree Swallow Nesting Box Cam Update 6🐦🌿

The 5 tree swallow eggs continue to be incubated inside our live cam nesting box. MRRI scientists expect the eggs to begin hatching sometime this week. Once hatched, tree swallow chicks emerge blind and without feathers, relying completely on their parents for warmth, food, and protection during the early stages of development.

Osprey Live Cam Update 6 🦅

Nest building has slowed down as the nest is now suitable for eggs. Scientists have also observed the osprey spending more time guarding and staying close to the nest, a strong sign that egg laying may begin soon. Once the first egg is laid, the female will spend most of her time incubating the eggs for roughly 1 month.

Osprey Live Cam Update 5 🦅

MRRI scientists are continuing to observe exciting changes in osprey behavior around the nesting platform this week. The male osprey has been showing increased activity bringing fish and food back to the nest, while the female has become noticeably less active and is spending more time settled directly on the nest.

This shift in behavior is a strong sign that the pair may be preparing for egg laying very soon. During this stage of the breeding season, females often remain closer to the nest while males take on more responsibility gathering food and defending the territory.

Tree Swallow Nesting Box Cam Update 3🐦🌿

MRRI has spotted the first tree swallow egg of this season for the pair using the camera-equipped nest box! Tree swallow activity has greatly increased recently with birds coming in and out of the box almost constantly. MRRI scientists have also spotted tree swallows guarding the nest by peeking out of the entrance.

As of now, we have only spotted one egg, as the pair has mostly hidden it under a bed of feathers, but there may be more there now or on the way. Stay tuned!

Osprey Live Cam Update 4 🦅 | April 30 - May 5

This week’s captures show the osprey pair eating fish hunted directly from the marsh, highlighting their active foraging and feeding behavior. MRRI scientists also captured stunning images showcasing the impressive wingspans of the osprey in flight around the platform and surrounding area. Nest building continues as the pair gather materials, preparing their nest for eggs. Check out the osprey building their nest bringing in vegetation with their talons!

MRRI scientists expect eggs and chicks by next month, stay tuned for the next update!
