Taylor House History

Located at 400 Manila Street, the site of a tung oil orchard, Lane and Lawrence Taylor built their home. Architects Landry and Matthes, of Hattiesburg rendered the plans in June of 1952. The house features extensive interior use of wood, traditional application of wrought iron, and an exterior wall of reclaimed handmade bricks. The bricks in the home are from the old Varieti

es Theatre in New Orleans, Lousiana. Lawrence's love for New Orleans goes back to the 1930's, when he was in school at Soule Business College, a highly regarded College founded by George Soule in 1856. The former Soule College building is in the Garden District and is the entrance to Buckner Mansion. A few years after graduation, Lawrence met Lane at the McInnis Boarding House in Leakesville, MS. She was teaching school and he was managing the Leakesville Veneer Mill. Soon after, my grandparents were married on June 20, 1937 at 10 a.m. in the home of her parents Edward and Margaret Lane in Lorena, MS. History

There have been many events in the home over the years. The Lucedale Garden Club featured the home on their Christmas Tour "A Celebration Christmas." The Taylor House has also been the site of numerous tea parties, dinners, and club meetings. Family holiday dinners, especially at Christmas, have always been enjoyed in the main dining room of the home. The kitchen is almost preserved in the same original condition sans a few old appliances. Lots of love and hospitality have been served from the unique kitchen island. Today, Mimi Lane Taylor's kitchen is under the command of Chef, caterer, and close friend Melisa Hamilton. From Mimi's Kitchen, Melisa will provide the on-site catering for all Taylor Lane Venue parties, weddings, meetings, and eventually daily specials. We look forward to booking your event and sharing a little of the Taylor House Venue and Mimi's Kitchen with you. Kim Taylor Davis
