LA Jazz Festival 2026 Key Art by Otha “Vakseen” Davis III

This piece reflects the same pulse that moves this city in the summertime—sunlight, rhythm, community, and the kind of joy that spills out onto sidewalks. Vakseen channels the spirit of jazz he’s always been shaped by: improvisational, soulful, rooted in history yet fully alive in the present. Commissioning a local artist whose vision resonates so deeply with LA’s creative heartbeat felt not just fitting, but essential to the foundation for what LA Jazz Festival represents.

📍Dunbar Village, Historic South Central

The LA Jazz Festival continues to pay homage to the African American origins of jazz in Los Angeles. The Dunbar Hotel was the crown jewel of a vibrant, early 1900’s Central Avenue jazz scene. In segregated Los Angeles, the Dunbar was a refuge. Its first-class accommodations helped it become the entertainment hub for West Coast Jazz. Swipe to learn more about its history and legacy.

Rest in Power to Sonny Rollins.

Seen here in a 2011 conversation with Tavis Smiley in Los Angeles, Rollins reminds us what jazz can hold: humor, force, freedom, and searching.

“Jazz is a spirit.”

The Saxophone Colossus’ sound keeps moving.
