**** a note from Brad: The lyrics of Larry Levan’s Dance Floor answers the question who does NYC belong to? We begin with the indigenous and their eternal claim to this land and in a very real way all the rest of us are immigrants migrants or aliens. The song celebrates the cross-cultural, cross-race, cross-gender, cross-generational lifeblood of the NYC underground. Larry spun the music that felt good to him and the format defied categories of every kind. The dance floor was seeded and tilled for the human kind in his hands. The song celebrates the radical black q***r foundations of house music and how the culture gave permission for beings of every kind to discover and feel their freest truest selves.
