I know LA environmental activists / MVMT folks see this is a time to stand up for our allies. Police brutality is systematic and racism is (so sadly) alive and well. It’s time for that to change. Nobody is winning until we’re all ok. Let’s be cautious with germs... but let’s get in the streets and in the ears of our elected officials. Convict these cops and every other one who takes a black life so lightly. We’ll post updates here and see you soon, friends. @ Downtown Los Angeles

Dear friends and supporters,

We would like to share with you a project we support. Our very own art curator and content manager, Alexandra Velasco, launched the fundraising campaign for her film Becoming / El Devenir on Seed&Spark last week.

https://www.seedandspark.com/fund/becoming-eldevenir

Inspired by true events and set during the 1992 Los Angeles riots, "Becoming" revolves around a day in the life of two Mexican immigrants, Diego and Mireya. Diego is a six-year-old boy who is was born into an abusive upper-class family. Mireya is an 18-year-old woman who lives in Boyle Heights and whose family immigrated from Michoacán a couple of years prior to when the film takes place. The story takes a dark turn when Diego's older brother Ramón bullies him into shooting Mireya with their father's rifle while playing a seemingly innocent game of war. Diego, wanting to fit in, ends up killing Mireya. Because of their family's political connections, the crime goes unpunished, and there are no consequences for him or his family. Forty years later, we find out that he has actually become the President of Mexico, perpetuating the cycle of abuse of power and toxic masculinity.

Well, I can now say with certainty that Friday 11/1 was a day I’ll never forget. After all the hard work leading up, the 6:00 start that day, all the amazing people that put in their love and energy, the Youth Climate Strike was awesome. The young organizers of Youth Climate Strike Los Angeles, the adult allies and the star power that showed support... the thousands that attended and the message that was made SO nice and loud and clear (mad props to Shinobi and team for that stage production!!) - “dear leaders, you are NOT doing enough to address climate change or even oil industry pollution in our own city” - the whole thing was so powerful. And this little activist, pictured... so incredible to hear her speak. I was shaking. It was an honor to work on the event around Greta Thunberg and the other amazing speakers. In this photo I was waiting to move the gate to let the youth organizers out to lead the march. I thanked her and we high-fived.
The show at The Moroccan and the party that followed... epic as well. I hurt my voice but in retrospect I’m not surprised... I gave that day all I had!! More pics to come... This one of course by the fantastic Colleen Allison Barjas / Colleen \ Allison / Photo

Who we are

The Future is Bright! Sunstock returns for a third year to impassion, educate, and activate our local communities through music, art, food, discussions, and more, all centered around building greener cities and better futures. Catch some great music, inspiring talks, activism hubs, and more at this all-ages event.

Sunstock is produced by Trapdoor Social. It began in 2016 with 2500+ Los Angelenos in attendance, with local bands including Cults, Wavves, The Allah-Las and more, and with a fundraising mission that resulted in a $10k donation of solar power to Kids Cancer Connection. The festival is non-profit, solar-powered, and focused on strengthening the LA community and sustainability movement to create a better future. Sunstock is the brainchild of Trapdoor Social, who also produce solar-powered concerts around the country while on tour.
