Today's World Cup Fact #9:

For the first time in World Cup history, vanishing spray will be used by referees in the 2014 World Cup.
The water-based spray will be used to mark the position of the ball for a free-kick on the pitch. The spray will also mark the ten-yard line for the defending team during a free kick. This prevents players to form a defensive wall too close to the ball. The spray appears as a white spot or line that automatically disappears after a minute.

Cameroonian Roger Milla was not only aged 42 when he played in his third World Cup (the first African player to do this), but he also managed to score against Russia and therefore has the record as the oldest goal scorer at a Fifa World Cup.

German legend Lothar Matthaeus played 25 games across five World Cup tournaments. Only he and Antonio Carbajal (the legendary Mexican goalkeeper) have played at five World Cups. Lothar’s haul of 25 games is unmatched by anyone else, the closest being the evergreen Paolo Maldini who notched up 23.

The first FIFA World Cup was held in Uruguay back in 1930 and 13 countries participated in the very first World Cup tournament.
(Seven from South America, four from Europe, and two from North America)
The hosts won the final on July 30th, 1930 with 4-2 over Argentina.
The following day was declared a national holiday in Uruguay!
