Your Sunday could look like this! COME CAKE WITH ME!

It’s time to play with FIGS IN THE GARDEN. You’ll start with a fully stacked spelt-walnut chiffon cake layered with fig jam and honey cream cheese mousse, then finish it with bay leaf buttercream, fresh figs, flowers, herbs, and sugared fruit. Come play, learn a few new tricks, and leave with an absurdly beautiful cake of your own.

Cake from last weeks popup jim + james. Layers of olive oil buttermilk chiffon, roasted pineapple coriander compote, curry leaf custard, salty honey buttercream, and black lime date sugared pistachios. Dusted with Passionfruit, Dragonfruit and Spirulina. Decoration very inspired by Indian flavors and all the colors of Holi.

Dropped a recipe for this wobbly little watermelon and buttermilk panna cotta jewel on EAT MORE Substack over the weekend. I developed it for the Watermelon Board, and while it didn’t take the top prize, we haven’t been able to stop eating it.

My goal was to improve upon an ice-cold slice of watermelon under the summer sun—or bust. The jewel is juicy, with fresh watermelon hidden inside. The tart, creamy buttermilk panna cotta cosplays as the rind. And the syrup is pure watermelon, concentrated over ice and infused with lemon verbena.

It looks fancy, but comes together with just a few knife cuts, a little boiling, and time.

I grew all these zinnias, forgetting they were giants. For one summer, we lived in Wonderland—dwarfed beneath fifteen-foot flowers swaying in the breeze, Bear a little gnome weaving among them, running wild and disappearing behind broad leaves.

Late-summer stone fruit cake: buttermilk chiffon, the last of my Andy's Orchard mixed stone fruit jam, basil mousseline, and salty brown sugar buttercream.

Earlier this month I got to work with the incredible Los Angeles Times Food team on THE ULTIMATE BIRTHDAY CAKE—testing the writer Carolina (Carolynn) Carreño recipe, food styling the cover shoot and, fulfilling a dream I’ve had since first seeing Zoolander, living my hand-modeling cover-girl fantasy. ✋✨

And then inside (!!): 15 of L.A.’s best birthday cakes, plus my tips as the “Buttercream Queen”—a title I accept with absolutely no notes. 🧈👑

Getting to make something this joyful with a food team I’ve admired for years, in the city I’ve built my life and career in, having it published in my BIRTHDAY MONTH, was genuinely a dream. I’m so grateful they trusted me to be part of it, and I really, really hope I get to do more.

So excited to be doing my TOMATO GIRL SUMMER CLASS AGAIN with Christopher Kimball’s Milk Street, September 14. Come explore my favorite way to bake from ROOT TO BLOSSOM. For this class we will celebrate leaf and fruit!

If you came to my in person class in Los Angeles we played with olive oil cake, black pepper mascarpone mousse, tomato strawberry coriander jam and tomato leaf buttercream. For my virtual students I’m adding a bonus buttercream — charred tomatoes watching Swiss buttercream. (See previous post!)
