Featuring works created by immigrant and refugee women in the collective’s workforce development programs, the exhibit highlights how traditional craft can become a pathway to income, stability, and renewed identity. Each piece reflects not only skill and creativity, but the resilience of women navigating new beginnings. Through this exhibition, Neococo Collective invites the community to witness the connection between art and impact where every thread represents dignity, opportunity, and belonging.
Neococo Collective is a women-led, social enterprise creating equitable job opportunities for displaced, refugee, and immigrant women through the art of hand embroidery and handicrafts. Rooted in community, our work connects women’s talents with meaningful, dignified employment, restoring confidence, identity, and belonging through creativity.

Join us and artist Boris Schaarschmidt on Thursday, May 14th, 2026 from 7-9:30 PM for the opening reception for the multi-media installation NOT A LIFESAVING DEVICE.

NOT A LIFESAVING DEVICE is comprised of a series of photographs and video art created by Los Angeles-based artist Boris Schaarschmidt in December 2023, during the Arctic Circle Expeditionary Residency aboard the sailing vessel Antigua.

As AI-generated images increasingly blur the boundaries between reality and fabrication, Schaarschmidt's works embrace that ambiguity: although they may appear artificial, they are entirely real. In the context of global warming, non-native species are increasingly moving into fragile ecosystems, symbolized here by an inflatable flamingo, an object radically out of place in the Arctic.

Simultaneously, the inflatable pool float references the rapid growth of tourism in polar regions, where leisure increasingly overlaps with vulnerability. The phrase "NOT A LIFESAVING DEVICE," printed by the manufacturer directly on the object itself functions as a literal safety warning and a symbolic statement: In moments of real emergency, this device offers no protection.

AMRUM
Germany, 2025, 93 Minutes, digital projection. In German with English subtitles.
Director: Fatih Akin, Screenplay: Fatih Akin and Hark Bohm, Cinematography: Karl Winter Lindenlaub, Editor: Andrew Bird, Cast: Jasper Billerbeck, Kian Köppke, Laura Tonke, Diane Kruger, Detlev Buck, Matthias Schweighöfer. Producers: Fatih Akin
Herman Weigel, Production Co.: Bombero International GmbH & Co KG i.G. (Hamburg), Warner Bros. Filmproduktion GmbH (Hamburg).

It is the Spring of 1945 on the German island of Amrum, a remote outpost in the North Sea. The front is far away, and 12-year-old Nanning (newcomer Jasper Billerbeck) spends his days working the nearby farm and his nights fishing, helping his mother to feed their family. Despite the hardship, life on the beautiful, windswept isle seems idyllic. When their anti-fascist neighbor Tessa (Diane Kruger) mentions to Nanning that the war will soon be over, the boy – too young to understand the political implications – is pleased to imagine that his father, a N**i officer, might soon be coming home. But his mother Hille (Laura Tonke) is a true believer, and word of Germany’s imminent defeat sends her into decline. One day from her sick bed, she wishes for white bread, butter and honey, near impossible luxuries on Amrum which Nanning innocently tries to find for her. But as he sets off on his quest, he learns from his neighbors that the enemy is far closer than he imagined.
From Golden Globe Award-winning filmmaker Fatih Akin (In the Fade, Head-On) and lensed by internationally acclaimed cinematographer Karl Winter Lindenlaub, whose stunning visual language captures the beauty of the rugged North Sea island, Amrum is a tender coming-of-age tale about the loss of innocence set against the waning days of the Second World War.

Winner of the Bavarian Film Award 2026 for Best Film.
