Yesterday, the City of Richmond welcomed the Venerable Monks of Dhammacetiya as they passed through on their 2,300-mile Walk for Peace.
On the 100th day of their journey, the monks traveled through Richmond and invited residents to walk with them from Fire Station 17 in Southside to City Hall, where thousands gathered to hear remarks from Mayor Danny Avula, Governor Spanberger, and Venerable Bhikkhu Pannakara.
Venerable Bhikkhu Pannakara’s message was clear: slow down, put your phone away sometimes (we all need to hear that), care for each other, and remember that the peace we seek in the world starts within each of us.
We extend our deepest gratitude to the Venerable Monks and to Richmond residents for providing such a warm and friendly welcome to our guests. We wish the monks a safe journey as they continue their mission to Washington, D.C.

We congratulate our Penobscot Nation relatives in Maine on this historic occasion. The Appalachian Mountain Club has transferred 1,700 acres to the Penobscot, which is a tremendous step in recognizing self-determination and advancing tribal sovereignty. We celebrate this milestone and honor the Penobscot Nation's stewardship of their homelands.

My paternal grandmother, Marion Eunice Osgood, standing atop Mt. Liberty, her image captured forever by my grandfather Don. She LOVED the outdoors. And she loved climbing mountains. She allegedly climbed all of the 4000' footers. That love for adventure runs strong in the veins of my sisters and I. And I have stood in that very spot, with Danielle Black by my side, looking across the valley below towards the Kinsmans.....and from the top of North Kinsman looking back across the same valley to the Franconia Ridge and Mt. Liberty. (with dear friend Todd McDonnell) There is no feeling in the World like standing atop a tall, steep mountain, knowing you got there through the commitment and power of putting your body to use, one foot in front of the other, lungs pumping, muscles working, the body balancing and rebalancing itself to support your forward momentum. And the reward? The view. To stand far above the confines and expectations of the modern world, feet on rocks that stood in the sun before the time of the dinosaurs. Nothing around you but sky. And wind. And cloud. The sweep and sway of the landscape falling away from you in all directions. The air is different way up there. Thinner. Lighter. You can smell the mountain you stand upon. You can taste the sun. You become a completely different being when you are so high above the World. You are no longer a person saddled with expectations and responsibilities. You become a wraith of the forest you've climbed through, ethereal. You are Free, like the falcon lazily circling the valley below, a creature of trees and rock and wind. Societal constraints and requirements don't exist up here. The self you must be down below you've left behind, locked safely away in a parked car. You don't need labels to define who you are up here. Atop a mountain, you just are. Nothing more is needed. Here, your soul is free. Until you have to climb back down. Until memories of what you left down so far below begin to find you, call to you, claim you one more..... There is almost a hollowness that occurs as you step back into the treeline, a weigthedness that lies in wait for you to come back it's way as you slowly pick up the constraints and responsibilities you have shed and put them back on as you descend. And, that night as you lay asleep, your soul dances in the memory of standing above the world......
