Canelo Alvarez Backs Anthony Joshua To Beat Tyson Fury In Long-Awaited Super Fight
The long-awaited showdown between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua is finally edging closer to reality — and one of boxing’s biggest names has already picked his winner.
Providing both heavyweights come through their scheduled tune-up fights later this summer, Fury and Joshua are expected to meet before the end of the year in one of the biggest all-British clashes the sport has ever seen.
While fans remain split on who would come out on top, undisputed super middleweight king Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez made his prediction clear when speaking to Boxing News, backing Joshua to defeat Fury when the two finally collide.
“I think Anthony Joshua [will win]. I am always with Anthony Joshua. It is a good fight but I go with Anthony Joshua.”
Canelo’s support for Joshua is no surprise. The Mexican superstar previously spent time training alongside the former unified heavyweight champion in the United States, where Joshua briefly worked under renowned trainer Eddy Reynoso before later moving on to Robert Garcia for his Oleksandr Usyk rematch in 2022.
Now, Joshua enters arguably the most important phase of his career with a new-look setup involving members of Oleksandr Usyk’s team — adding another layer of intrigue ahead of the Fury fight.
Before the mega bout can officially happen, both men still have business to take care of.
Joshua returns on July 25 against unbeaten Albanian puncher Kristian Prenga, a dangerous knockout artist with 20 wins and 20 stoppages, although he has yet to face elite-level opposition.
Fury, meanwhile, is preparing for his second appearance of 2026 and recently hinted at fighting on a Dublin card the following week. A lower-risk opponent is expected as “The Gypsy King” looks to avoid any late chaos before the blockbuster showdown with Joshua.
Boxing has seen huge fights collapse before the finish line. Joshua’s shock loss to Andy Ruiz Jr in 2019 famously ruined an undisputed clash with Deontay Wilder, while Wilder’s defeat to Joseph Parker later destroyed another planned heavyweight mega fight.
This time, fans will be hoping there are no surprises.
If both men reach the finish line, Fury vs Joshua could finally settle a rivalry that has dominated British boxing for more than a decade — and Canelo believes “AJ” will be the man standing tall when it’s all over.
