Motown came to the Lied last night🎙️

Some of you first heard The Temptations on the radio, some of you grew up with them playing at family gatherings, and some of you were hearing them live for the very first time. But by the end of the night, everyone was singing along to the same classics.

Music brings generations together. And that's what we love!

Friday, Olivia Komahcheet spent the morning with Lincoln Public Schools students, working through the sounds and stories behind her music and helping them find their own voice.

Today, she brought it to our stage, building cinematic, looping soundscapes live, weaving her Comanche and Otoe-Missouria heritage into indie and pop textures in a way we haven't quite seen before. An absolute treat✨

Special thanks to Mid-America Arts Alliance for their support of this program. This performance was presented in partership with the UNL Center for Great Plains Studies

Angel Stanislav Wang is 23. He's already played Carnegie Hall and stood as a finalist at the Van Cliburn Competition, one of the most demanding piano competitions in the world.

You don't need to know a thing about classical music to be mesmerized this Tuesday. He's playing Liszt's Piano Sonata in B minor and Stravinsky's Three Movements from Petrushka — two of the pieces pianists spend years working up to. Plus, selections from Debussy and Granados.

Live, intimate, right in front of your eyes.

There are only three places in the country where this happens: Los Angeles, New York City, and right here in Lincoln, Nebraska. And last week, Lincoln got to witness two new musicals in development.

ASCAP Foundation Grow A Show 2026 is a partnership between the ASCAP Foundation and Lied Center that gives brand-new musicals, ones still be written and developed, a real stage and a real audience before they ever get close to Broadway.

Actors read the material out loud for the first time and go through limited rehearsals. A panel of working Broadway professionals watches, then gives the writers direct, honest feedback on what's working and what isn't. It's the kind of room most people never get to sit in, let alone help build.

During the week, UNL performing arts and theater majors participated in Q&A sessions alongside those Broadway pros plus several masterclasses, showcasing current repertoire and receiving real-time feedback on their performances.

Opportunities like this exist because of people like you who support the Lied beyond a ticket purchase. Funding from our donors and members is what allows a program like Grow A Show to keep bringing this kind of access to Nebraska, both for our students, and for the future of American musical theater.

Before he was a nine-time Grammy winner and one of the most important figures in American music, Wynton Marsalis was a face kids knew from Sesame Street and Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, teaching an entire generation what a trumpet could do, long before they knew his name.

He'd go on to grace the cover of Downbeat more times than almost anyone alive, and to spend nearly forty years building Jazz at Lincoln Center into one of the great institutions in American music.

This fall, Marsalis is stepping back from that role after four decades. Before he does, he's bringing his trumpet and his orchestra to the Lied on October 9.

If you grew up watching him teach a puppet what swing feels like, or you've followed his music for decades, this is a rare chance to see him on our stage during a moment that won't come again quite like this.
