And now for our final Community Days award winner for 2026, Steve Percy, our Volunteer of the Year. As with all of our award winners (and nominees to follow in a later post), please say hello and thanks if you see him on the street.

Here is one of his nomination letters: What truly sets Steve Percy apart is his boundless enthusiasm for community collaboration. He is a "connector" who thrives on fostering relationships between local government, non-profit partners, and community members. As a dedicated volunteer with the Cascade Head Biosphere Reserve Board, Steve has brought conservation education to the public, fostering a deeper partnership between CHBR, public events and LC Parks & Rec. Furthermore, Steve's work on the LC Parks and Recreation Advisory Board has not been limited to board meetings. Steve is known for being present at practically ALL of the parks and rec community events— being hands on with the public and engaging with enthusiasm. Steve has an impressive ability to inspire residents to take pride in their local environment, helping to preserve our beautiful ocean and park amenities. Steve is also a passionate member of the OCCC Foundation - his PSU days currently help with this!

Anyone who has met Steve knows what a JOY he is, and how fortunate Lincoln City is to have him here. He has a big heart, and we're glad he's willing to share it with all of us. Thank you, Steve, for your energy and enthusiasm in making Lincoln City a better place to live, work and play!

Now for our Leader of the Year award winner. Yes, Susan Wahlke might be our mayor, but that is not the only way she displays leadership. Here is her nomination:

Susan does not merely hold volunteer positions - though she holds many! She embodies service, leadership, and a profound commitment to the betterment of Lincoln City and the surrounding community. Her ability to effectively lead in the public, non-profit, and volunteer sectors simultaneously is truly remarkable and worthy of this recognition.

As the VOLUNTEER City Mayor, Susan provides tireless leadership, focusing on uniting the community and tackling complex issues with a collaborative, servant-leader approach. Her commitment extends beyond official duties into the heart of the community.
As the Secretary of the Kiwanis Club of Lincoln City, she ensures that the engine of community service runs smoothly, facilitating projects that support children and local families.

As the President of the Lincoln City branch of Oregon AAUW, she works passionately to empower women and girls through education and equity.

As a board member for Business for Excellence in Youth, she is instrumental in facilitating critical programs like Stuff-a-Bus and Backpacks for Kids, directly ensuring local children are prepared for academic success.

As President of BAMA (Business for Excellence in Youth), she aligns business leaders with success.

As a board member for the Lincoln County Foundation, she is committed to long-term philanthropic health and resource development in our region.

It goes without saying that anyone that knows Susan, knows how much she loves Lincoln City and its people. She inspires everyone around her to aim higher and give more. There is no better leader than that!

And for our 3rd award from the 2026 Lincoln City Community Days, Betsy and Keith Altomare of very own BIJOU THEATRE LINCOLN CITY won the award for their innovative way of supporting their community with recliner chairs. Huge congratulations for the win and the community support with comfort.

Their nomination reads as follows: Keith and Betsy have devised a way to allow cinema lovers to support local nonprofits while enjoying movies in comfort.
Their recliner program has raised thousands of dollars for good causes, while also spreading the word about all the great work that is being done in our community.
Allowing people to give while sitting on their butts - genius!

Our second Community Days award winner, for Unsung Hero of the Year, is Ed Armstrong. If failing at retirement results in a volunteer like this, then we will all be better for it. Congratulations, Ed!

His nomination letter: Ed Armstrong is one of those guys who has failed at retirement. Instead, he has chosen to keep working but not for a paycheck. Ed does so much in the broad community where he has chosen to live, I don't know where to start.

For Kiwanis, he volunteers at Spooky Spectacular, The Easter Egg Hunt, collects donations and candy for both of those events, participates in the diaper drive, wraps gifts during Christmas at the Outlets and waits tables at the pancake breakfast at Mo's. He is the maintenance person for the Kiwanis flag program all by himself, as well as putting up and taking down flags on holidays so we all enjoy the Kiwanis parade of flags.

At his church, Ed was instrumental in getting new carpeting installed and many maintenance projects for the Congregational Church. He keeps the gardens beautiful and maintains the green house on site. He serves on several committees to keep the church running. Ed helps church members who are having health or aging issues to maintain their homes and drives them to doctor appointments and the grocery store. He also raises tulip pots in his greenhouse and sells them at church to raise money for needed projects.

Ed works with Habitat for Humanity to do maintenance items to help people stay in their homes including such things as with building ramps for access into those homes. Ed and his wife, Helen make dinners at the St. James Episcopal Church for the outreach program of free meals for anyone needing them. They coordinate others and plan menus in advance to keep things running smoothly for their group of chefs.

Ed chairs a student scholarship program administered through Lincoln County Foundation annually deciding on who should be honored with help to further their educations.
One goal Ed has every day is to reach out to at least one of his friends to make sure they are doing ok. Maybe they need to talk or need a visit. He just checks in with people.

Ed has a beautiful yard, garden and a green house. He shares flowers with the church making beautiful arrangements with his wife to decorate for church services. He shares the bounty of his gardens with his friends, just to make their lives a little better.
Ed is the definition of an "unsung hero". He doesn't call attention to himself but is certainly known by those who have benefitted from his acts of kindness. He sets a good example for us all.

It has been almost a month since the 2026 version of Community Days ended with a closing dinner and awards ceremony. We, unfortunately, had several missing nominees, and didn't get good pictures of those who were in attendance. Progress has been made to remedy that situation.

Please meet our first award winner, Rising Star of the Year, Anh Vo. Huge congratulations to her for her commitment to her community. Her nomination letter follows:

Anh exemplifies the spirit of a Rising Star through her consistent dedication to both her school and community. Throughout high school, she has been actively involved in school activities and community events, not only participating but often taking initiative—organizing efforts and leading others to successfully accomplish shared goals.

Her leadership and commitment have been recognized with numerous honors, including Kiwanis Student of the Month, Rotary All-Star Student for three consecutive years, and the Golden T Award in all four years of high school. Anh has held significant leadership roles, serving as Class President during her freshman and junior years and currently as Student Body President and serving as a Site Council Student Representative. She is also the current president of Taft’s Club Social.

Beyond her leadership at school, Anh gives back to her community by volunteering at the Driftwood Library, and helping Lincoln City Kiwanis Club by organizing candy drives for their Halloween & Easter events. At the same time, she has challenged herself academically by taking college courses to earn her Associate of Arts Transfer degree—all while maintaining an exceptional 4.0 GPA throughout high school.

Anh demonstrates that leadership is not defined by age but by action, initiative, and a genuine commitment to making a difference. She is truly a deserving candidate for the Rising Star award.

First time emcees, Kennedy Stentz and Jason Kutchma brought fun, history and thoughtfulness to the ceremonies this year. Kennedy started it all with a lovely poem about the town center (hope to have it posted later), backed by a selection of photos to really bring the nessage to lifr (thanks Dave Price).

Jason tied our present emcees to one of favorite Scottish emcees from the past, Patrick Alexander. Did he realky wear a quilt to emcee? Nope, it was a kilt. The surprise entry of Patrick to the stage was a hit. Huge thanks to Patrick and the Oregon Coast Today for their donation of over $1,200 to the Community Days fund to cover costs for next year. Thank you to all who purchased Community Days ads.

We are experiencing some frustrating internet access issues today. Uploading pictures is deadly slow. Yucky issue, but pictures from our celebration dinner will be coming soon. Fingers are crossed.

Until then, keep April 16 - 24, 2027 marked on your calendar for our next fun and entertaining Lincoln City Community Days celebration.

Enjoy all the conversations with those you call friend or family. Memories are for a lifetime of retelling and laughing, so make lots of them.

Community Days is April 17-25, 2026. Put it in your calendar and help us celebrate this great community........and the fact YOU are a part of it.
