Earlier this winter the Wyndmere Fire Department, contacted the Lidgerwood American Legion Ward E. Bullis Post #84 requesting funds from their charitable gaming to purchase a Hurst Battery powered Jaws of life unit.

The lidgerwood legion very kindly granted us a generous donation of $15,000 to do this. This unit was received and went into service two months ago and will be another valuable asset towards our community in emergencies.

We can’t thank them enough for their contribution to the Wyndmere community. Because of donations like this we can lessen the burden on taxpayers to upgrade and purchase new supplies and equipment.
Sincerely thank you from all of us!

Tonight, the Lidgerwood Fire Department brought their new electric powered Jaws of Life to the Post meeting. They talked about the new piece of equipment and thanked Post 84 for our donation that it made it possible to acquire this vital lifesaving tool. The best part was that it's already been put to use as they rescued a recent accident victim that was involved in a head-on collision with a semi. GREAT JOB GUYS!

The rifle is affixed with a bayonet and inverted, signifying that the Soldier went down fighting. The boots signify the Soldier’s last march onto the battlefield. Dog tags are imprinted with the Soldier’s name and hung from the rifle so their identity will never be forgotten. The helmet is placed atop the rifle representing what the Soldier stood for and signifying that their battle is now over. The Battlefield Cross is a sacred symbol amongst military members. Since a funeral is typically not possible during wartime, these symbols serve as a rallying point where surviving members of a unit can mourn and remember their fallen comrades. This Memorial Day, reach out to the Veterans that you know and give them a simple message: “We Remember.” We remember our country’s fallen, your brothers and sisters, and we appreciate and honor their sacrifice.

If you haven't yet renewed your membership, now's as good as time as any. Also, if you know someone who needs to re-up, please remind them to do so ASAP. Our mission is too important, and our need is too critical, to not be at full strength during these times of outreach for our veteran community.

Probably one of the best ways to enhance your knowledge and understanding of the American Legion, and your role as a member, is to take advantage of every opportunity to further your education and training.

American Legion staff will present on Buddy Checks and MyLegion.org through Microsoft Teams.

On this day in 1919, The American Legion is federally chartered, which authorizes the as-yet unincorporated organization to proceed to the adoption of a constitution and bylaws, elect officers “and do all other things necessary” as outlined in U.S. Code, Title 36, Chapters 41-50. Under Chapter 43, “Purposes of corporation,” much of the language is borrowed from the original draft Preamble to The American Legion Constitution with some notable deviations, such as “to promote peace and good will among the peoples of the United States and all the nations of the earth” and “to cement the ties and comradeship born of service.” The original charter outlines the powers and authority of the organization, membership criteria, naming rights, exclusivity to manufacture and use The American Legion emblem, and a requirement that “the organization shall be nonpolitical and, as an organization, shall not promote the candidacy of any person seeking public office.”
