Dear parents of addicts,
Thank you.
In a world that’s quick to judge, to label, to reduce a human being down to their lowest moment… thank you for choosing something different. Thank you for choosing love. For choosing patience. For choosing to stand beside your child even when the road is dark, uncertain, and painfully long.
I want you to know, you are seen.
After I perform “Surrendering,” it never fails… a parent finds their way to me. Sometimes with tears already falling, sometimes holding them back just enough to get the words out. And every time, they trust me with a piece of their story. And that… it’s not something I take lightly. It’s overwhelming in the most human way. It’s heavy, but it’s sacred. Because in those moments, I’m not just sharing a song, we’re sharing truth. Real lives. Real love. Real loss. Real hope.
Some of you tell me about your children who fought their way back, who found light again, who are still here, still breathing, still trying. And I see the pride in your eyes, the relief, the gratitude.
Others… share stories that don’t have that ending. Stories of children who didn’t make it out of the storm. And there are no words big enough for that kind of grief. Only silence, respect… and a heart that holds space for yours.
But through every story, every single one, the common thread is you.
Your love.
Your fight.
Your refusal to give up on your child, even when the world already had.
“Surrendering” was written from a place of pain… but it lives because of you. Because of your honesty. Because of your willingness to keep loving when it’s not easy, when it’s not pretty, when it doesn’t come with guarantees. You are the reason this message matters.
So from the bottom of my heart, thank you for trusting me with your stories, your pain, your hope. Thank you for reminding me why I do this. And most of all… thank you for loving your children the way you do.
Last night was extremely special, because I hugged the mother of the person this song was originally written about. It was truly a full circle moment with the music and the very human experience It was inspired by.
