Tips for eating well on vacation if you're traveling to a place by car that has a kitchen:

1. Prep some easy meals in advance. This does mean traveling with a cooler! Think about recipes that can travel well like putting marinade and meat in a ziplock bag, a casserole that can be made ahead and baked later, or lean ground beef and hamburgers for a fun grilling night.

2. Pack vegetables that are easy to throw on the table. Salad, carrots and hummus, or broccoli that can be tossed in olive oil and salt and roasted.

3. Have plenty of delicious fruit available in the fridge for snacking. This is the best time for amazing sweet fruit! Whether it is strawberries, blueberries, peaches, or whatever is your favorite, have it ready for hands that want to snack!

4. If you want food that you don't normally eat, get it! You're on vacation and you should be able to try and enjoy different things!

Many runners make this big mistake during long runs in the summer...

Do you ever skip fuel because it is just an easy run? Think again! Your body uses glycogen (the storage form of sugar) more quickly in hot conditions!

So give yourself the best chance to feel as well as you can and recover well by continuing to fuel well during your long, hot, summer runs!

Should you carry your own hydration at a race?

Pros to carrying:
You can have whatever beverage works best for you.
You don't have to stress about getting through the crowd to the water.
You can sip whenever you want.
If there aren't enough hydration stations on the course, you're covered.

Cons to carrying:
Hydration bottles add extra weight that you're carrying around.
It is one more thing to remember on race day.
It could possibly make you slightly slower, but this may be negated by the fact that you're well-hydrated.

It is a personal choice! Just be sure you are not carrying a hydration system that you haven't trained with!

If you want to become a more powerful and efficient runner, make sure you're doing this:

Hill sprints!
How often? 1-2x per month
How to do them? Find a good hill and run hard up the hill for about 30 seconds. Notice landmarks at your starting point and end point so you don't have to constantly look at your watch. Do a little jog back down the hill in between each set for recovery.
How many? That depends on your fitness and readiness! If you're new to this, 3-4 is a good place to start. If you are more advanced, you may do around 10 of these sets.
