A Halloween Trick or Treat Moment: Tootsie Rolls & the Marines of Chosin!
•
In honor of Halloween, we’re sharing one of our favorite candies and the incredible story behind it!
•
During the Korean War’s Battle of Chosin Reservoir, Marines fought in brutal temperatures of -30°F to -40°F. With am******on running out, especially 60mm mortar rounds, which was desperately needed to push back the advancing Chinese forces the Marines radioed for an airdrop. The code name for 60mm mortar rounds was “Tootsie Rolls.” The ensuing airdrop was surprising. The radio operator receiving the code did not have the proper code book, making him believe the Marines were asking for the actual candy, not motor shells. Mortar shells came later, but the candy was invaluable.
With rations frozen solid, Tootsie Rolls became more than just a sweet treat. Marines could thaw them in their mouths for a much-needed source of calories and energy.

But here’s where the story gets even more interesting! Marines also used the softened candy to patch damaged vehicle fuel lines and help keep their vehicles running in the freezing cold.
•
Tootsie Rolls have become a memorable part of the Chosin Few’s legacy and a reminder of the resourcefulness and determination of the Marines who fought their way through unimaginable conditions.
•
This Halloween, we’re giving this candy a whole new meaning. Sometimes, the sweetest things come with the toughest stories.

WE’RE JUST WEEKS AWAY FROM THE FROZEN CHOSIN CHALLENGE!
The countdown is on, and it’s time to get ready! As you put in those final miles and prepare for race weekend, don’t forget that being prepared means knowing the course, looking out for your teammates, and putting safety first.
Today, we’re highlighting the 7 Safety Stations positioned along the course and sharing important emergency information every participant should know before stepping up to the challenge.
Know before you go:
• Know where the Safety Stations are located.
• Save the emergency contact numbers in your phone.
• Look out for your teammates and fellow participants.
• If you need help, speak up. Your safety matters!
The Frozen Chosin Challenge is about grit, teamwork, and perseverance — but it’s also about making smart decisions and getting everyone home safely.

Participants should prepare for temperatures ranging from 5°F to 45°F, strong winds, and the possibility of snow, ice, and reduced visibility.
