History of the Hillbilly Fair

In the early 1960’s, a group of Laurie Merchants began gathering together for what they called Hillbilly Days. It typically occurred during the summer months and was a time of merriment and fun for all who attended. They often ran specials in their businesses for the event, which lasted a few days. Hillbilly Days and the early years of the Hillbilly Fair were held in parking lots and near the mall in Laurie. In the late 1960’s, Hillbilly Days became the Hillbilly Fair. In the 1970’s, what is now known as the Lake West Chamber of Commerce took over planning the fair, until the City of Laurie began hosting it. The land was purchased and named Laurie Fairgrounds where the fair is held today, and over time the fair has continued to grow. Many activities during the fair have come and gone over the years, but there are a few that have been around for decades, such as the Hillbilly King and Queen contest, the parade, and various games. So make sure to save the dates September 14th and 15th to come out for the 49th Hillbilly Fair, it’s going to be a great time!
