The Mint 400

The Mint 400 Known as “The Great American Off-Road Race™,” The Mint 400 is the most celebrated, prestigious, and c Hunter S.
(1200)

The Mint 400 is the oldest active off-road desert race in America, and is held annually near Las Vegas, Nevada. It began in 1968, and is considered to be one of the most challenging and prestigious automobile races in the world. The race features an average of 500 competitors spread across 80 classes of vehicles, from million dollar "Unlimited" trucks – to virtually stock VW Bugs often referred to

as “Class 11” cars. The Mint 400 racecourse is made up of 100-miles of the most challenging desert terrain in North America. It features jagged rock; deep silt, cactus, highs-speed dry lakebeds, tight Joshua tree forests, and a custom built short-course style off-road park built specifically to allow spectators a bird’s eye view of the race. Because the course is so difficult, some classes are only required to complete two or three laps, while the unlimited classes including the overall champion must complete all four laps or 400 miles total. Typically, less than half of those who start the race ever finish. Thompson enshrined the Mint 400 in the American mainstream consciousness when he wrote about it for his article “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas”, for Rolling Stone magazine in 1972. For nearly five decades the “Great American Off Road Race”, has attracted top racers, movie stars and celebrities from around the world.

Great spending time with Department of the Interior Secretary Doug Burgum (pictured here with UNLTD COO Josh Martelli) and Bureau of Land Management - Nevada Director Jon Raby at a roundtable focused on the future of public lands.

We had a productive and honest discussion alongside ranching leaders and fellow stakeholders from the outdoor recreation community, including mountain biking, hunting, and OHV groups.

What stood out most. Secretary Burgum went around the room and asked each of us directly what his administration can do to support our industries!

The answer was consistent across the board.
Preserve, defend, and expand access to public lands.

For us in off-road racing, that means protecting the trails, routes, and open desert landscapes that have been part of our sport for more than 60 years. It also means ensuring large-scale land use decisions, including energy development, are balanced in a way that does not cut off access to the recreation communities that depend on these spaces.

Public lands are not just land. They are heritage, industry, and a way of life for millions of Americans.

Thank you to Secretary Burgum and Director Raby for taking the time to listen and for supporting off-road racing and the broader outdoor recreation industry. We appreciate the dialogue and look forward to continuing the conversation.
