“Living in Vegas I’m always surprised by the life that thrives around me. As a new desert dweller I assumed the earth would be barren but instead I am surrounded by flowers, shrubs, and mormon tea. These student’s too subverted a harsh environment to create a community that felt close despite distance and to unearth the resilience to make the most of their senior year. It has been 200 days since it last rained in Las Vegas but despite the increasing austere environment this capstone class continued to adapt and grow, to create something entirely unique both as individuals and as a collective. I hope you find their work as exciting as I do. Welcome to the garden.” -Professor Kay Leigh Farley

Mama

"Mama is an app that provides support for breastfeeding moms. The perception that an infant is not satisfied by breast milk alone is one of the top three reasons why women stop breastfeeding prematurely. A shocking 76% of women worry that their milk supply is low, when only 1-5% of women actually have low milk supply.

There is a need to better encourage and support moms that want to breastfeed to help them have the tools necessary to maximize their milk supply and continue breastfeeding as long as they intend to. Mama is a place that facilitates ongoing encouragement through support chat groups, a personal lactation consultant, journal prompts, and personalized updates. It provides essential tips for how to maximize milk supply while also maintaining optimal health for both mom and baby. The main purpose of Mama is to reduce the number of moms who worry about their milk supply, and boost confidence in their individual breastfeeding journey."

Mālama

“I moved to Las Vegas from Hawai’i back in 2017 so I can further my education. Over these three years, I have had my fair share of being homesick. Thinking about the things I miss from Hawai’i, I wish there was an easier way of sending and receiving them. After further research, families & friends (in Hawai’i) that send “care-packages” to Hawai’i residents that attend out-of-state colleges find it inconvenient and costly to gather products and mail. As a result, these students lack access to comfort foods and items from their home state, thus causing the feeling of being homesick. Because many people from Hawai’i are attracted to Las Vegas, it has dubbed the nickname, “The Ninth Island.” The goal of Mālama is to provide a service for college students in Las Vegas to access Hawai’i-goods that are not as accessible, in hopes to feel at home. To accomplish this, I created Mālama as a brand that will focus on a subscription-box style program that includes original Hawai’i-themed stickers, supplies, & Hawai’i-based goods.”

ShapeShifter

“Have you ever accounted your success to luck and not your own skills? Ever felt like you don’t deserve any appraisal you received on your accomplishments? Do you ever think that sometimes, you are not enough? If so, you are experiencing Impostor Syndrome--the psychological feeling of being exposed as a fraud. 70% of professionals experience Impostor Syndrome and the affliction it may carry: anxiety, perfectionism, self doubt and fear of failure

ShapeShifter is here to address that you are not an impostor and always have been enough! Shapeshifter is a collection of random thoughts and words that are placed and positioned together to create a series of poems that revolves around Impostor Syndrome. It dwells on accepting the fact that no one is an impostor when it comes to success, you are a shapeshifter ready to take any form to be the best version of yourself. ShapeShifter shows the reflection we have towards ourselves and how we use that to validate our pain to heal, so we can be proud of our individual growth and finally find peace and happiness.”

New Spin

“New Spin is a 26-page zine that follows the journey of Spinny, a bashful little bear as she literally falls into the world of New Spin and is forced to process her increasing negative self-talk. With the help of Spinny-but-with-glasses (Spinny’s alter-ego in the zine), she discovers the reasons why negative self-talk is a thing, its effects, and how she might teach herself to be just a little bit nicer by putting a new spin on how she talks to herself. Featuring fun illustrated comics, original characters and activities, this zine also becomes an interactive guide to being less mean to yourself. This zine was created in the hopes that its readers can be more conscious of the way they talk to and about themselves, especially in a generation where self-deprecation is rampant in online and physical spaces.”

Marea

“Can you picture disposable masks polluting the Meditteranean sea by the thousands that we run the risk of having more disposable masks than jellyfish? Since coronavirus emerged, an estimated 194 billion disposable masks and gloves are being used worldwide every month. Putting a new plastic pollutant into our environment due to the careless discard of masks. Disposable plastic masks that end up at sea could take up to 450 years to fully decompose and leave the marine ecosystem. Consequently, disposable masks cannot be recycled because they are considered medical waste, they end up in landfills, incinerated, and in our oceans. Marea is a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing awareness and help inform the public of the dangers medical waste brings to sea life. Marea also is providing reusable masks in the hope to decrease the amount of plastic being thrown away. By choosing the reusable face masks, one is being more Eco friendly, staying safe, and reducing plastic waste.”

Ref:rain

“Fashion has always been one of my biggest interests especially streetwear fashion. It’s always been a big part of my life and helps define who I am. Because of that reason, I decided to do my capstone thesis project on a fashion brand that I created called Ref:rain. With this brand, I wanted to project my vision on what a sustainable fashion streetwear brand would be. I believe that there are a lot of problems involving the fashion industry in today’s society such as fast fashion. Fast fashion is a cycle that is far from sustainable because it depletes Earth’s natural materials at exponential rates and exploits workers which then results in an overwhelming amount of waste and non-ethical conduct due to mass production. The goal of Ref:rain is to REFRAIN from the cycle of fast fashion and promote sustainable fashion to decrease the amount of waste and to help promote a good ethical conduct within the working environment. To accomplish that goal, Ref:rain will be promoted as an influential, sustainable streetwear fashion brand that takes minimalistic influences from Japanese streetwear culture. It will compete with various streetwear fashion brands as a sustainable fashion brand.”

Unitary

“Unitary is a lifestyle brand addressing and bringing awareness to men’s mental health; specifically toxic masculinity in physical health. With fitness in mind, Unitary plays on the idea that the brain is a muscle that needs exercise as well. By providing first-hand experience and real working resources, Unitary promotes a healthier mind state, activities currently deemed less masculine, and activities outside of physical fitness such as leisure time. The entire premise of the brand comes from a love for all things mental health and becoming the best version of oneself. Most influence has been pulled from worlds such as punk and hardcore music, underground streetwear, and urban lifestyles resulting in a very DIY attitude. The aforementioned ideals have been achieved first and foremost through type choices, color choices, and final treatments. Secondly, pieces created act as the vessels that carry and promote Unitary’s ideals and entire being as a brand.”
