August held a lot.

The circle on the 8th. The stories from Sebastopol still settling. The lessons Spirit has been patient enough to keep offering.

As this month closes I find myself doing what I always do at the end of something full.

I sit with it.

I let it be what it was without trying to make it into something more or something less.

And then I open my hands for what is coming next.

September is on its way. And if August taught us anything β€” it is that the rhythm does not stop just because the calendar turns.

It just begins again.

Come back. The circle will be here.

Aho.

This one is for the people who keep coming back.

Who show up every month. Who make the drive. Who bring a friend. Who sit in the circle even on the hard days.

This work does not belong to me. It belongs to all of us.

Thank you for being part of it. August would not have been what it was without you.

Aho.

People sometimes think the medicine only happens in the circle.

In the workshop. In the ceremony. In the big, marked moments.

But I have learned β€” after forty years of this work β€” that the drums teachings are on going.

It teaches you in the morning before anyone else is awake. In the way you breathe when something is hard. In the pause before you respond instead of react.

The rhythm is not something you go to.

It is something you come back to. Over and over again. In the smallest, quietest moments of an ordinary day.

That is where the real work lives.

That is where I find it every time.

I have guided hundreds of people through the drum making process over forty years.

And not one of them walked away the same person who sat down.

That is not something I can teach. That is something the drum does on its own.

This is what the process actually looks like from the inside.

Aho.

Surrender did not feel like losing.

It felt like something I had been gripping for far too long finally leaving my hands.

And in the quiet that followed everything began.

If you are holding something right now, this one is for you.

Aho.

People always ask me how long it takes to make a drum.

And I always say longer than you think. And exactly as long as it needs to.

Because a drum is not something you build in a hurry.

You start with the hide. You let it soak. You let it soften. You wait for it to tell you when it is ready.

Then you stretch it. Slowly. With intention. With your hands and your breath and your full attention.

And somewhere in that process usually when you are not expecting it something shifts.

It stops being a piece of hide on a frame.

It becomes a drum.

I have made hundreds of drums over forty years. And that moment still stops me every time.

You cannot rush what is becoming sacred.

Aho.

There is a difference between knowing your path and walking it.

For a long time I knew. And still I resisted.

I told myself I was not enough. Not educated enough. Not prepared enough. Not worthy of what Spirit was asking of me.

And Spirit waited. And then Spirit stopped waiting.

The illness that brought me to my knees was also the thing that set me free. Because on the other side of that surrender was everything I was meant to do.

The drums. The circles. The music. The walk.

Whatever you are resisting right now β€” I am not here to push you. I am just here to say that the other side of surrender is worth it.

Spirit does not make mistakes.

Someone asked me what lesson I learned the hard way.

I did not have to think very long.

When Spirit tells you that you are not following your path that you are not remembering who you are you listen. You do not argue. You do not say, I am nobody. I did not go to college. What could you possibly want from me?

I said all of that. And Spirit kept speaking anyway.

Until I stopped.

What brought me to stillness was not a quiet moment of clarity. It was illness. Serious illness. The kind that walks you right up to the edge and makes you decide.

That is where I surrendered.

And that is where everything began. The drums. The circles. The music. The walk.

I share this not to frighten anyone. But because someone reading this may be in the middle of their own resistance right now. Arguing with something they already know is true.

Stop long enough to listen.

Spirit does not make mistakes. It never has.

Aho.

The drum circle is this Saturday.

August 8. Unitarian Universalist Church. 2000 South Solano Drive, Las Cruces.

Come as you are. No experience needed. No preparation required.

Just a willingness to show up and sit inside the rhythm for a while.

We have been gathering like this every month for years. And every time, something in the room reminds me why this work matters.

I hope you will join us.

Someone asked me recently β€”
What is one lesson you learned the hard way?

For me, that answer has always been the same.

When Spirit speaks, you do not question it. And you do not say no.

For a long time, I did both.

Spirit kept telling me I was not following my path. That I was not remembering who I am. And I kept responding β€” I am no one. I did not go to college. I do not know anything. What could you possibly want from me?

And then Spirit stopped whispering.

I purchased vitamins from a health food store that were tainted. I did not know. For two weeks I was taking 2,000 milligrams of poison a day. I became so ill that I walked right up to death's door.

That is where I finally surrendered.

And that is where my life's journey truly began.

From that place of surrender, I became a master drum maker. I started the drum circles. The music came. The spiritual walk opened up in front of me like a road I had always been meant to walk.

I remembered who I am.

These lessons β€” the hard ones, the ones that bring us to our knees β€” most of the time they come from Spirit. Because Spirit does not make mistakes. Spirit knows exactly what it is doing.

The best thing we can do is stop long enough to listen. Accept what is being given. Let it flow through us. And then go out and bless the world with it.

Aho.
