ARTU DUO Mar. 15 concert is CANCELLED due to blizzard. We hope we'll find another time to present them and this wonderful program. Stay posted!

In 1919 Rebecca Clarke's Viola Sonata had very strong finish in a composition competition sponsored by Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge. Out of 72 entrants Clarke tied with Ernest Bloch who ultimately got the tie-breaking vote from Coolidge. The "consolation prize " was Coolidge's commision of Clarke's 1923 Rhapsody for Cello and Piano, Coolidge's sole commission from a woman composer, resulting in a work many people consider to be her masterpiece.

Artu Duo built their Sunday concert around this wonderful work that has been gaining a lot of performing interest in recent years.

Rebecca Helferich Clarke (27 August 1886 – 13 October 1979) was a British classical composer and violist. Internationally renowned as a viola virtuoso, she also became one of the first female professional orchestral players in London.[1]
