In the summer of 1969, something strange was reportedly stalking the shores of Lake Worth, Texas. Witnesses described a creature so bizarre that it became known as the Lake Worth Goatman.

The legend exploded after several people claimed to have encountered a tall, hairy creature with both human and goat-like features around the cliffs and woodland near Lake Worth.

One of the most famous incidents occurred when couples parked near the lake reported that the creature suddenly appeared and attacked their car.

Soon, crowds, reporters and police descended on the area hoping to catch a glimpse.

Then came an even stranger sighting.

During the frenzy, witnesses claimed the Goatman appeared on a cliff before hurling a car tyre towards the people gathered below.

A photograph published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram appeared to show a mysterious white figure running through the trees.

Was Lake Worth really home to an unknown creature, an elaborate hoax, or simply a local legend fuelled by fear and excitement?

More than 50 years later, the Lake Worth Monster remains one of Texas's strangest cryptid stories.

👣 THE LAKE WORTH MONSTER HAS INVADED FORT WORTH CITY HALL!

Paige Frantz, Public Education Program Coordinator for the Fort Worth Park & Recreation Department, has curated a special display celebrating one of the city’s most enduring legends—the Goatman of Greer Island, better known as the Lake Worth Monster.

“Our exhibit of the Goatman of Greer Island, also known as the Lake Worth Monster, features artifacts related to the legend, along with a life-sized model of the creature, giving visitors a fun and unusual way to learn about a piece of Fort Worth folklore.

“The exhibit is located on the north side of the lobby of Fort Worth City Hall through September 9. Anyone can view the exhibit during normal business hours.

“The idea behind the display was to bring some of our local folklore into City Hall while also highlighting the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge and its upcoming Monster Bash event. Our annual Monster Bash is a family-friendly event featuring guest speakers, food, hiking, tire throwing and plenty of opportunities to have fun with the area’s monster lore.

“The inspiration came from a combination of personal interest in the Goatman/Lake Worth Monster legend, a desire to promote the Nature Center and Monster Bash, and simply wanting to create something fun and unexpected for people visiting City Hall. While the subject is rooted in local legend, the display is meant to be playful and engaging.”
