Weekly Artist Spotlight: Building A Deathray

Building a Death Ray is a power-pop alt rock project, sitting somewhere between 90s alternative and 2000s post-punk with emo touches and a psychedelic fringe. Their lyrics touch on heartbreak and longing (This Is for You, Avalanche, Break Something Beautiful), disconnection and malaise (Suburban Nightmare, Haunted), finding connection for the time being (One Night Stand, Can You Move?) and the search for safety and belonging in a world that seems increasingly hostile (Run, You Can’t Be Here).

Hailing from Texas and the Midwest, the quartet formed in Metro Detroit via a post by Jason (bass) and Kevin (lead guitar) looking to form a band in late 2024. Each member brings decades of experience to their arrangements, blending genres and working out each part by consensus. They tend toward big vocal harmonies layered over rich guitar textures riding an aggressive rhythm section. That said, they know when to pull back to a simpler and softer cadence when the mood is right.

They have fun above everything. On any given night the audience may catch the theme song to Fraggle Rock or a reggae version of Motion City Soundtrack’s Everything is Alright. The positive vibe is distinct but also dynamic.

2025 saw the band take third in the Michigan State Fair Superstar contest, where they performed every day of the fair. For 2026 the band looks forward to more festivals and local gigs, recording live and in the studio, and building up their social media presence. If you catch them live - say hi! They’d love to chat! And they may just play your request whether they know it or not.

Today we want to take a moment to thank Tim Miller, one of our founding board members, for his time, dedication, and service to the organization. His passion, creativity, and support helped lay the foundation for everything we continue to build today.

While we're sad to see him step away from the board, we're incredibly excited for him as he focuses on his own music career and the next chapter of his journey. We know he's going to continue doing amazing things.

Thank you again, Tim, for everything you've contributed to the Michigan Music Awards family. We wish you nothing but success moving forward! ❤️

Weekly Artist Spotlight: FUNDERBIRD

Formed in 2022 and hailing from Milford, Michigan, FUNDERBIRD delivers an intense blend of ‘90s-inspired, heart-on-your-sleeve post-punk from three Gen-X survivors who know how to channel raw emotion into powerful sound.

Featuring Greg Koenig (bass/vocals), Eric Carlsen (guitar), and Adam Wilson (drums/backing vocals), FUNDERBIRD began as a fun experiment between friends learning grunge covers—but it didn’t take long for that spark to evolve into something much bigger. What started as casual jam sessions quickly transformed into writing original music, hitting stages across Southeast Michigan, and carving out their own place in the local music scene.

Their debut full-length album, Let It Kill You, released April 1, 2026, showcases their signature energy and authentic post-punk edge. The album is available now on all major streaming platforms and for purchase on Bandcamp.

Beyond the music, FUNDERBIRD is deeply committed to strengthening their hometown scene. The band has played an active role in helping River’s Edge Brewery in Milford develop “The Warehouse,” a thriving DIY venue space that has become a hub for live music and community connection, hosting shows for up to 300 people.

FUNDERBIRD isn’t just making music—they’re helping build a movement. Keep your eyes on this Milford powerhouse as they continue to amplify Michigan’s independent music scene.
