Holy Smokes 2026 is one for the books.
More than 350 guests gathered under the ten
t for The Church of the Holy Spirit's annual Spring Dinner — and together, we raised over $145,000 for Mission and Outreach.

That support reaches more than twenty partner organizations across Lake County and Chicago, from Beacon Place and Reading Power to Waukegan to College and The Josselyn Center.

🎺 On the program:

The ICA Brass Quintet will perform lively arrangements of George Gershwin’s “An American in Paris” and Scott Joplin’s “Maple Leaf Rag.” ICA Composer-in-Residence James M. Stephenson’s “Hubble,” from his “Celestial Suite,” pays tribute to both the famed astronomer and a musician of the same name, with a trombone cadenza providing a “Big Bang.”

ICA Artistic Director Patrick Godon will bring Lake Forest Place’s incredible new Steinway B Spirio piano to life with American composer Libby Larsen’s “Four on the Floor.” The composer describes this boogie-woogie-inspired piece, which also features violin, cello, and bass, as a “celebration of American music and American musicians.”

Aaron Copland’s renowned “Appalachian Spring,” featuring the original orchestration of 13 musicians, will close out the evening. This Pulitzer Prize-winning piece, originally commissioned for Martha Graham’s dance company, depicts a frontier love story. Copland channeled Graham’s “prim and restrained, simple yet strong” nature and the Shaker hymn “Simple Gifts” to create one of the most acclaimed works in the American canon.

Iron sharpens iron. Mtr. Jihan is back from a week at Princeton Theological Seminary with twenty-three remarkable women called to lead. Grateful for the teaching, the laughter, and the friendships that will carry forward. Watch out, CHS — she’s home and she’s bringing the fire.

In 1902, a Celtic cross was placed in the nave of The Church of the Holy Spirit. Over the years, it moved — to the narthex, the hallway, the basement, where it was nearly forgotten. On April 23, it came home. Raised in loving memory of Rick Preiss, whose family made this gift possible. Watch it rise.
